        The head looks more racer like to me than it does rat snake. Plus going by the distribution range of the trans pecos rat snake it doesn't seem as likely to be one of those.

        Most snakes can move fast if they really want to. Just how fast was this snake?

          I don't always just go by patterns when identifying snakes. A few years ago a buddy of mine caught a Western Diamondback that didn't have black and white stripes on its tail and weird patterns down its back. There was nothing white on its tail whatsoever. I've also seen Prairie Rattlesnakes with solid black tails and two dots side by side all the way down their back.

          I don't know if they had a long line of inbreeding going on in their family or what. But somewhere along the way something weird happened and they turned out a little different. It happens....

            I had one several years ago. Was not as big as that one . It died . Have also had a different color phase one that was orange .
