i guess this is a 50/50 split on good or bad idea...

but the way i see it is that SOME people treat rentals like they are trying to destory them (which is not a good idea since u can get hit with a exensive fine for damage through the rental company) but at least i know that the rental company did all the maint and was inspected regulary

or you can just buy from a indivual that did NO maint or someone that had it and is now trying to sell due to damage that they are trying to hide or pass on a problem to someone else

so i guess any way its still a gamble

I’ve been driving “program cars” for 30 yrs. Great buys. All clean as a whistle. No issues. I’m always careful to buy something with at least a little factory warranty left. No telling how many 1000’s of $’s it’s saved me over the years.

I bought a rental GMC Yukon XL from Avis that was 1 year old with 32k miles and owned it for 3.5 years with zero issues. Paid a $3,000 less than the others non rental. For me it worked out great.

If the price is right I would buy one. I’m betting the majority of folks are not *******s and abuse them. Even if they are they are the exception not the norm.

No, because I know how I drive rentals.

I bought a rental car ( Dodge Durango) ten years ago that was two years old and had 22K miles on it. We are still driving it.

I have rented 4X4 PU trucks before and run them hard off road, but didn't abuse them. After all, why rent a 4X4 unless you are going to take it in places where you need it.

Would you rather buy one that the rare person abused for a weekend or the chance that the used one owner is their personal that they have been abusing for the last 2-3 years. I don't think most people that rent try to abuse them, especially on the high end SUV which is normally rented by higher end professionals or families. I would pay closer attention to where it can from and avoid areas up north that salt the roads all winter.

I've been in quite a few rentals over the years, can't remember ever abusing one excessively. Couple times I've hit the gas pedal to see what they've got but aside from that drive as normal. I'd say test drive it and look at maintenance records, probably good to go.
