University of Alaska...Anchorage. Anyone have any info?

My youngest son is a senior in high school and has gotten a lot of emails from various schools cause of his grades and test scores.

He has received several request from U of Alaska/Anchorage. Mama don't like it...too far, but he'd love to go to Alaska.

Anyone go to school there? know of anyone that did? He'd be going for Engineering.

He has an academic full ride offer from a public university here in Texas...But Alaska would be cool. I'll do some more research on it.

    thanx,

That sounds neat and all but that distance would be hard. Being able to come home regularly was worth something to me for a while. I know nothing about Alaska or the school so there is that.

I got a letter from them back in 2008 when I graduated high school, too. (My family took a drive up to Alaska in July of 2007). Only way I think they got my information was when I had to purchase my out of state fishing license.

Had a good friend in hs that went there right after hs graduation and earned a degree in civil engineering. He stayed there several years after graduating and then returned to Texas. He had a great experience and says he wouldn't trade it for anything.

The schools are getting his info from his ACT and SAT test scores. He's done well in those test.

My dad was a professor at the Univ of AK Juneau campus a few years ago but couldn’t tell you much about the Anchorage campus

Where’s the full ride in Texas? If he wants to be an engineer it’s kinda hard to beat a&m or UT. Is he pretty outgoing? Alaska would be cool, just don’t know if it would get old after 4-5 years

For engineering, the program really needs to be ABET accredited or, for most disciplines it’s really not worth attending. Without attending an ABET program it limits one’s ability to get licensed.

Other than Civil, the University of Alaska Anchorage has only had ABET accreditation since about 2007. Plus, it’s a pretty unknown school, at least to me, and I’m pretty involved with an international engineer society so I’m familiar with lots of schools.

UT, aTm, UTA, Tech, UTD, UTSA - those are all great state schools and the first four I listed are very well known and well respected throughout the US for engineering. Take that free ride - when I was in school, only 25% that started engineering graduated with an engineering degree. Alaska may sound fun but reality is, with a respected engineering program, you’re going to spend 10-12 hours a day, 6-7 days a week, going to class and studying if you want to graduate. Location/extracurricular activity isn’t really usable. After he graduates, he’ll make plenty of coin to be able to vacation in Alaska.

What drew her to U of Alaska?

She was stationed at Elmemdorf and retired there.
