Any thoughts/ info on Southwestern University in Georgetown?

My kid has fallen in love with this little school. I’m hearing it’s a great school and actually has a great science program for a liberal arts school but I’ve never heard about it. Any scoop?

I went there my freshman year then decided to transfer to A&M. It's small (and boring) but good academically.

Pretty quiet campus and have heard good things about the academics but it’s private so will be pricey. If not living on campus it will be hard and expensive to find places to lease, real estate is stupid right now there. I am an officer in Georgetown if you have any more questions shoot me a pm

I have lived in Georgetown for 40 years. Southwestern is a first class university. Georgetown may have been boring years ago but not today. It is growing and thriving - the square is full of students. Georgetown is also one of the safest towns for a student IMO - they have access to Austin but do not have to live there. Your kid cannot go wrong going to school there

            Pretty campus.

Insanely expensive for what it is.

The truth is, with very few exceptions, no one cares where you go to school.

They would be just as close to home at UT or A&M

Small boring campus. Top notch education. Not much of college atmosphere as far as students following the sports programs

I randomly have six or seven close friends that went to school there, mostly to play baseball, and they all loved it.

Great great school. Students must live on campus for at least the first 3 years I think, so there's that.

Thanks for the input fellas. I went to a cheap state school, and the Army paid for it. So this expensive private school stuff is a shock to my system. Southwestern did offer her a decent scholarship so thankful for that. I like the feel of Georgetown, I really didn’t want her caught up in Austin everyday, but she can still get down there and cut loose a bit when she needs to (not too often). She wants to follow her mother and go to med school. Southwestern has a very high placement rate into med school which is why she picked it. I would have bet money on her going to A&M but it’s too big for her liking. Again, thanks for the feedback.

Excellent school in a great location, if you are ok with private school tuition, I sure wouldn't try to steer her away.

Better half graduated from there - It is a great little school. Very highly rated. She has done great in the Accounting world, and she really enjoyed her time there.

If she is seriously interested, shoot me a PM, and I can put your Daughter in touch with her. Especially if she is thinking about Accounting.

I graduated and played baseball down there about 8 years ago. Really good academics, small campus, and it is definitely expensive. They do offer quite a bit of both merit-based and need-based scholarship opportunities, but it still winds up hitting the pocket book pretty good. All of the science programs are very good like you've heard. I basically went to play ball and do engineering stuff, so I wound up with a physics degree. But the pre-med, chemistry, bio programs are all really good. The campus vibe/culture is definitely that of a liberal arts school. Feel free to shoot me a pm if you want any more info.

                            This is an accurate statement.

Happy to disagree, heartily. When someone tells me they're a Southwestern grad, 100% of the time they have turned out to be smart, hard-working, and independent. That's what you get from someone who decided a top notch education and comparatively-boring campus was a good fit for them.

Some of the dumbest college grads I've ever met in my whole life went to Texas public schools. A degree from one of these universities says nothing about the person.

I looked at Southwestern. It was too boring for me. I was not smart and hard-working enough to care.

It's a great college, small, less students per professor. Some family members went there and I wanted to until I toured SWTSU and found my home

In hind sight I should have gone to Southwestern instead of majoring in girls and beer at SWTSU.

I seldom disagree with you but I do on this. If a potential employee has a degree from Southwestern, SMU, St. Edwards or Rice it can make a difference.

Never hired one though; couldn't afford them. Have a bunch of Aggies though
