Yep, I've wondered the same thing myself.
I know some people on big leases, 3 buck county, and only can kill 2, but hey, if that rocks their boat. Only rule we have on our place, if you bring a guest and he kills a deer, then you can't bring anymore guest for that deer season. No limit on family members. Don't have that "You have to shoot off my tags" deal. And we still have plenty of deer at the end of the season. And we're in E Tx.

Not my rule it's the ranch owners, and yes I would like to be able to shoot more does.

We hunt 800 and have 4 hunters. The land owner doesnt set any rules other that treat it like it's yours. We use the county rules and allow family to shoot does and pigs but the does typically come off the "paid" members tags. First year on the place and only 1 doe taken, we dont really know what the herd looks like yet but try to be conservative.

I understand your plight though, thats a lot of money and heaven forbid you break down the price per pound for venison if you include the total cost associated with hunting. I like to think it's for the kids and the future of hunting but certainly the poor man is loosing a foot hold.

I guess my original post didn't answer question 2 the way you wanted. Look at it this way, if there were not rules stating that your family's kills come off of your limit, there would be some lease members that would bring every family member out there to shoot deer. So now, one spot limit ends up being 2,3,4,5,6+ limits. The rule is not there for people like you that want to shot only a few does. It is there for the people that just want to shoot, shoot, shoot.

                Deer lease rules

I will try to say this with out sounding like a smart a--. I run the leasae I am on. Simple answer to the questions: Family rule first, what about single hunters with no kids, is it fair? As a lease mgr. it is too hard to control paid members bringing guests and family down to hunt.
Not allowing to fill tag: if that is what a hunter wants I don't want him on my lease, past experiences show all that hunter wants to do is shoot first thing that comes by aand then say I am hunting for a trophy now. Too many small deer get killed that way.

I pay 2550 for a lease with mule deer and whitetail. One buck of each no does
and out of the bucks only one can be a trophy, the second has to be a cull.

The main thing is you have a CHOICE, I will tell you like I tell my hunters, IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE RULES GO FIND ANOTHER PLACE TO HUNT.

Hope you see it from a different side now.

I hunt in a 3 doe county and our land owner only allows 2does... His thought is that alot of deer get killed on the road that cuts through the place and if we killed our 3 that would be too many dead deer! maybe your guy thinks folks around yall kill too many and the only way to control it is to limit what you kill.... IMHO, your paying that high price b/c your hunting where NICE bucks are...Nowadays, its seem that your either "trophy" huntin or "meat" huntn but you aint doing BOTH on the same lease...IN MOST CASES! I trophy hunt mexico and can only kill 1 deer but I have a cheap lease close to Fredericksberg and can shoot 4 deer, turkeys and axis. I had to get 2 leases to get the best of both worlds....maybe this is what you'll have to do as well!

Texas hunting definately isn't for the poor man. I'm amazed at what people pay to kill bambi here. Then agian, I come from the northwest where there are tons of wilderness free to hunt for anyone.

The place I hunt is 800 acers and has 6-8 different hunters on it every weekend Thursday thru Sunday, Oct. thru December. and I guess that is why we get deer like this.
No point restrictions, no spread restrictions, and no doe restrictions.
One size does not fit all.

                          Yep.

But 6-8 hunters might be one family on some family leases.

Obviously there are leases of all sizes that have responsible hunters and no rules are needed. There are other leases quite to the contrary. Heck, if everyone was responsible, we could just as well throw out all of the law books.

We lease about 2600 acres, no landowner input, no biologist. 8 lease members with 2 spots each. We have a lease manager among us (heck we all think we are one). For us the antler restrictions are working. From what we have seen in two years we have a good ration of bucks to doe. We are allowed one trophy (over 13 inches) and one spike. We have agreed to not hunt the does yet and it is working for us. Guest are allowed to shoot a spike or (I think a doe has been taken) off their own tags, but if they shoot a antlered buck (over 13 inches in our county) it comes off the lease members tag. We each pay for two spots and have two blinds/feeders because we think 16 members is too much on this lease and the traffic would be unbearable and a detrimate to the population. We have no meat hunters on the ranch and that is why this works for us. A typical setting I will see 1 doe 2 fawns or 2 young does. and 2 maybe 3 bucks.
I just wanted to share that if your guest takes a buck outside the ears it comes off the members tag (also if your grandson screws up and shoots an illegal buck it is considered your deer(your trophy)) but a guest is allowed to also take spikes and possibly a doe off their own tag.
This has worked well for us.
