Please educate me on used ATVs

    Good afternoon:

I am considering buying a used ATV for driving on a deer lease. My problem is I don't know anything about them. I've seen them, been next to them, but have never even ridden one. I rode motorcycles, but that was almost 50 years ago, and I would think ATVs are different in handling and stability with 4 wheels instead of 2. I don't know what the price range should be for a used ATV, nor if I should consider 2WD versus 4WD, engine displacement - etc. Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Dave

Buy a trusted brand... Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha or Polaris. You may or may not get a title. Bigger is usually better. (If you are planning to hunt it I wouldn't consider anything smaller than 400cc) Don't even look at two wheel drive unless you are deer hunting on paved roads. Use the NICB vin-Tele-check system to verify that it has not been entered as stolen. There are many downloadable bills of sale on-line. Print one and take it with you. Take a picture of the sellers driver's license during the transaction. Oh yeah....most ATVs on Craigslist are scams (Everyone is in the military and wants to ship or are selling for a family member). If you can't ride or test drive the ATV walk away. Hope all this helps.

ATV... 4-wheeler or side x side?

I have a 4 wheel drive Big Bear 4-wheeler I need to get rid of. Needs to go to someone who can clean the carb.

There is a nice Honda Rancher 4x4 in the classifieds for 3100$ that looks nice. Honda fourwheelers are hard to beat.

I have a 2006 yamaha Rhino 660 (side x side). love it. Bought it new and still running fine. Been a great tool. Love the bed to haul around corn to feel feeders and such. Very handy to have the bed in the back.

Kawasaki Bayou 220 2wd is all you need. Had one for years. It would go where others couldn't. If you happen to get it stuck, jump off, pick it up move it, walk it out. $1000

There fixed it for you lol..

All around if I wanted a hunting Atv it would be a Honda Rancher. Have ridden plenty of them and continue to be one of the most reliable on the market.

I would probably back away from any of them, that have a snorkel, for obvious reason.

4wd only way to go, and look good at the ATV. Was big into the riding scene a couple years back with snorkels, 31" tires, etc. I would steer clear of anything along those lines. On Craigslist they usually put "never been to a mud park" lol.

If it says Polaris, steer clear. The 2 I have owned broke me. 4x4 for sure, and also avoid the electric shift Hondas.

whether you need 4wd or 2wd is dependent on your terrain. I went with a Honda Rincon 660 when I was looking. It has been a very dependable bike. Used the 4WD a handful of times. Have hauled a lot of feed on it and pulled a trailer a time or 2. Also had a 220 2wd suzuki for my son. It is fun to drive and never got it stuck. So size is totally dependent on what you'll use it for.

I guess im in the minority here, but an older polaris is the way id go. Get an older 500 sportsman and youll be set. Had one for years with no issues.

Why? I thought Hondas were pretty solid across the product line?
