Sorry to hear this, it sure sounds painful.

Document all you can and contact an attorney. Most companies have liability insurance to cover these types of things. It's no being an ambulance chaser, it's just business. Hopefully he will be walking fine soon, but who knows if there is any issues that return later. Going through legal means will protect him.
