I see alot of questions and comments regarding Super 2 Status and, specifically for the Astros, Yordan Alvarez. Jake Kaplan, the Astros fantastic beat writer on The Athletic subscription site, answered a question on this in his most recent mailbag that is one of the most clear descriptions that I have seen.

Jake, would you explain the “Super 2” process and calculation a bit? It is my understanding that the “Super 2” rules are what is holding the Astros back on calling up Yordan Alvarez at this point. I understand that it extends the team’s control over him, and is why the Astros haven’t called him up even though he is mashing in Round Rock. — John K.

A common misconception is that Super Two concerns the number of years a player is under team control. That is not the case. Super Two concerns only how much money a player will make in his final four years of team control.

Let’s start with the basics of the salary arbitration system. In general, players reach free agency after they have accrued six full years of major league service time. Though 187 days make up the major league year, 172 days equate to a full year of service for players.

Most of the time players make the major league minimum or close to the minimum in salary — this season, the minimum is $555,000 — until they become eligible for salary arbitration, which happens after they reach three full years of service time.

However, there is an exception to that rule.

Every offseason, the top 22 percent of players in service time among players who have accrued between two years and three years of service time qualify for what is known as Super Two. This designation allows them to become arbitration eligible a year early, and thus go through the process four times as opposed to the usual three.

Recent Astros to qualify for Super Two include George Springer, Jake Marisnick and Lance McCullers Jr.

      Let’s consider Marisnick, for example.

Following the 2016 season, Marisnick ranked among the top 22 in service time among the players who had between two and three years of service. This made him arbitration eligible for the first time that offseason and put him on track for three more trips through the arbitration process afterward — during the 2017-18 offseason, the 2018-19 offseason and the 2019-20 offseason. Marisnick is set to be a free agent after the 2020 season.

If Marisnick hadn’t qualified for Super Two, he still would’ve been under team control through the 2020 season. But he would’ve gone through the arbitration process only the usual three times — in the 2017-18 offseason, the 2018-19 offseason and the 2019-20 offseason — rather than four.

Carlos Correa, conversely, just narrowly missed qualifying for Super Two. It’s why he didn’t go through the arbitration process for the first time until last offseason. He will be arbitration eligible again before next season and before the 2021 season, his last under team control. Not falling into the Super Two bucket following the 2017 season will end up costing Correa millions in cumulative salary over the 2018, ’19, ’20 and ’21 seasons.

How does this relate to Yordan Alvarez?

By keeping Alvarez in the minors into at least early-to-mid June and ensuring he doesn’t qualify for Super Two status following the 2021 season, the Astros stand to save millions on their 2022 to 2025 payrolls. Then again, the Super Two designation might not even exist by the time Alvarez goes through arbitration. The current CBA is set to expire Dec. 1, 2021, and it’s abundantly evident that service time manipulation by front offices is a big issue MLB and the MLBPA need to address.

But regardless of whether the Astros call up Alvarez on Monday or a week from Monday, they will have him under team control through the 2025 season. They save only money by waiting to bolster their injury-riddled lineup with one of baseball’s best-performing Triple-A hitters.
What he did not spell out is that there isn't a specific Super 2 date as it is decided by a percentage of each players called up in a specific year. That is why nobody really knows when that date will be passed. In years past, sometime after June 15th has been the date most teams consider past Super 2.
