    Do deer learn

I have seen times when deer bust me in a stand and then the next time they come the first thing they do is look right at the stand. This has made me wonder if they will eventually get leery of feeders. If a deer sees multiple other deer killed at a feeder will it quite coming to that feeder? If so, should we move our feeders around every couple years?

Not in my opinion. They just learn where to look for movement.

They learn. There's a school of thought that says never shoot deer in a feeder pen.

Putting too much thought into it. I have always heard a deers memory last 20 seconds. Myth maybe but I have killed deer, deer drops and seconds later the ones that ran off are feeding around the dead deer. I have also had instances like yours where they bust me and the next time they come in they look at the same spot.

Don't move feed locations. Best thing to do is have multiple setups around the pattern of the deer.

Don’t move feeders but move the stands around some . Make the spots different wind spots then what you had before if all possible they Will start circling your sets . If you don’t change them up some !

they absolutely learn. why else is it so much harder to kill a 7 year old deer than a 1 year old deer

I have heard the 20 second memory thing also but they sure remember where they saw me the day before. I am not sure how that is different from seeing another die. Maybe since they were not hurt it does not register as danger. I like the idea of having multiple setups on one feeder. That helps with wind also.

When I use to hunt Camp Bullis . The deer would start looking for a tri - pod or bling as soon as they came to a clearing with a feeder. I don't think it's natural for a deer to look in trees but after seeing a few of their buddies get shot .. learned survival ...

I agree with the 7 year old vs. 1 year old. That is why I thought moving a feeder 30 or 40 yards this time of year my be good.

Figure out their pattern to and from the feeder. Have a couple setups at the feeder and then (2-3) bow stands 50-100 yds off the feeder. You will be surprised how many mature deer skirt feed areas. Toss a little hand corn out as well in those spots occasionally as you hunt them.

We had a set that used to be strictly hand corn spot . We set a feeder on it because the hogs just kept wearing it out . We never had any problems when it was a hand corn spot of getting busted there but almost every time with the south wind blind we get busted now the north wind set is still fine but not the south wind spot. They totally changed how they came into the spot wind the wind was out of the south now it is weird.

I think some of the older doe's do

There is a lot of commits on here of the old doe's stopping her feet and snorting
every time you hunt in other words she knows you are there

Just because it's harder to hunt a 7 year old doesn't mean he learned. It's just as likely he was smarter to begin with. But I do think they remember smells and where they encountered them.

I like this. Makes perfect sense to me.
