You still have to have a hunting license to hunt. There is just no specific elk hunting license/tag/permit needed.

Thank you for clarifying that point. Im glad TPWD is trying to get everyone on the same page. Multiple opinions on a law are slippery to navigate.

That's interesting. so TPWD issues an internal memo, but won't issue a open memo to the public clarifying this? I had a neighbor get raided for allowing people to hunt hogs without a license. "This was one of the main citations he was issued not too long ago". So I am guessing that not everyone got the internal memo.

Yep, this is what they told us we needed. We stay down ten days, so we buy two five day permits.

              Non-resident pig hunting license needed?

I just spoke with my game warden. He said if someone resident or nonresident was to come hog hunting on my property they would not need a hunting license but they would need a hunter safety card/proof of completion of a hunter safety course. Even if they kept the meat.

This includes shooting hogs over a feeder, out in a field, etc.

Them hunting hogs on my place with my permission makes them my agent.

Public land you need a license

I don’t let anyone hunt on my place without a license. Period.

Just to throw a wrench in :-)

You don’t need it at LBJ or Bardwell. Those two I know for sure

We hunt private land down there and they tell us we need one. And when we used to go to the Texas Shootout , they would check and make sure we had one, that’s on private land also. I will play it safe, and buy one ( two for 10 days) and not have to worry about it. I understand if hunting javelina you absolutely need one.

The Texas Shootout would need it for the Javelinas I would think.

Oh yes...$48 non resident special 5 day permit. You get to pick the days it starts and ends. All exotics and hogs.
                      Very affordable for non residents.

I've always had my out of state family buy the $48 - 5 day license when they come down to hunt pigs. Takes all the work and debate out of the situation.

If the elk are behind a HF does one need a license or are they considered livestock?

they just raided his place last month. Just found what you said interesting because of the timing of his raid. Does TPWD plan on issuing a statement to the public to resolve this confusion? Because if you read the rules in a depredation permit the shooter cannot keep the animal. I do realize that the depredation permits are for certain animals and you don't need them for pigs. It would be helpful if there was a letter of interpretation of whether or not you need a license to hunt pigs.
