The situation you are describing and the situation you keep referring back to are 2 completely different things/scenarios. There shouldn't be any bashing over that situation but I know there's some on here that would.

The one that's getting bashed that you keep referring to was days after the shot and the authorities didn't think a shot to the *** end was a lethal shot. Then when you dump the meat to rot....

I would do whatever I thought was the right thing to do.

yup. people are still equating tracking a deer at night to what the poacher did. humane dispatch doesn't work as a defense multiple days later.

Big Bill I'm not sure why you keep trying to tie this thread to the 278 incident. The difference is night and day, ethical vs illegal. I'm not sure what your point really is. I thought you wanted an answer to your question, and I gave you one. If you want to bash folks for being upset about the poacher killing a 278" buck then sobeit.

To answer what you seem to really be getting at...

No, TBH'ers would not destroy a guy for putting a deer out of its misery. It's the right thing to do. It can also be done within the law. After dark simply call your local warden and let him know what you are doing. Then you won't have to worry about being crucified by the perfect people on here.

If I did what I felt was the right thing to do, I would not care what anyone on here thought.

The park rangers at the COE land I hunt won’t allow you to bring a weapon back with you after dark to collect your animal

Add in that this is done while trespassing for a potential record deer and the rest is history.
I'm not scared to shoot at night where I hunt, hell, it sounds like a young war when we hog hunt at night. Never had a complaint or a visit from the warden. It would be a thousand to one shot that anyone would ever know. Ethics has been defined as what you do when no one is looking. If I'm on my own place and have to finish a deer after dark, then that's what I'm gonna do.

Please show me where I “ keep trying to tie this to the 278”. I only mentioned it in the first post?? I have been basically asking my question because I have seen over the years many people here go off bashing people and playing judge and jury on many issues. So I was curious what the response would be to the situation I described. I think the 278 guy was a poacher and got what he deserved. But without a doubt if I got caught doing the recovery at night and got a ticket on my own land and it made it on here there would be those calling for a lifetime hunting ban..... same guys that went crazy during the first days of debating the crossbow I would imagine.
