In Germany back in the late '70s and a friend bought one and tried to self-teach himself. Well it didn't turn out well for him. First time off the hill (much lower hill) he made it about 100' and crashed. Next time, he was doing fine until he realized his line-of-flight was directly at a big tree. Instead of turning and avoiding the tree he pushed forward on the bar to climb over it. Well, pilots know what happens when you run out of airspeed and altitude in a stall--and he crashed again. Busted a couple of ribs and an arm, and had to shift his BMW with his left hand for a while. One of the guys with him said he was all wrapped up in lines and fabric and metal structure and they had to cut him out. He sold his damaged glider too.
