I'm just curious what would entice a buck to rub on a horizontal limb instead of vertical and are they rubbing on a particular post because the wood smells a certain way.

We hedge cut mesquite to change travel patterns for deer that come in down wind of blinds. Several of them have been rubbed completely free of all bark after we lay them over. It definitely works. We will do a couple in shooting lanes this year and see if anyone can kill a buck off of them. I will keep everyone posted on how it comes out.

I noticed an h-brace on an old fence in my huntin woods prob 10 years ago that they would wear out rubbing. I thought “I need to do something like that” this was before I had much to do with cameras. Time rolled on, and I never remembered to make a “mock” rub to try it. Then I saw ted miller on a huntin show somewhere doing it, and remembered I forgot to try one. Well, this past year I cut me bout a 8’ long green pine limb that was bout forearm sized, and rigged it up. Had some bucks sniff it,get their pic taken, but never rubbed it a lick. And this is within 10-15yds of a scrape I mock up and get lots of pics on for months on end. Think I will give it a whirl again, since the two short cut tree posts, and horizontal rub post have been out a year, maybe if there was any spookiness, that’ll be gone. Will prob replace horizontal section with new green one for the sap/smell. Good Huntin, and God Bless, Rusty

Here is a young buck standing by one of the tree “post” I cut, dug a hole, and set, prior to me putting in the horizontal rub post. Sorry bout the sideways pic, I have yet to cipher that out. I set the posts early September, cuz I had to haul my stuff way back in there, and to help em get used to them. Good Huntin, and God Bless, Rusty
