    Boat problems

I have a 93 Four Winns with a OMC Cobra 5.0 motor. I had it winterized at a local boat shop. Last weekend I took it out for the first time. I wasn't able to get it past the no wake zone before it started smoking and over heating. I killed the engine and got towed back to the ramp. When I got it home and cooled off I first suspected that the impeller was bad. I pulled it off and sure enough it was melted. So I changed it and started looking for more damage. I found that two of the freeze plugs (one on each side, under the motor mounts) were out. I found them laying in the hull by the drain. I'm not sure how to get them back in without pulling the motor. Has anyone used those rubber plugs to replace the metal ones? I'm gonna change the thermostat and hoses. Any other suggestions before I fire it back up? My fear is that I might have a cracked block since I had two of the plugs out. Any way to check this with limited mechanical ability? So far the oil looks fine. Maybe I got lucky.

Years ago I used one of those.robber plugs on my truck motor. Worked fine. The only way to melt an impellor is.to run it without water.

If ur freeze plugs popped, that's not good. You can hammer new ones in there. You can buy a freeze plug set at orileys. You need to visually inspect the block. So get in the engine compartment hang upside down use a mirror, whatever u need to do. Look for cracked or torn looking metal. I've had it happen once before. Mine looked like a baby tried to punch it's way out of the side of my block. It will be noticeable.

When your impeller blows, disconnect your other hoses and make sure to clear out any more impeller chunks that came off it. The particles will be in your hoses. This can cause you to overheat also

I may try to back flush the hoses and see if that helps. I checked every where I could to see of there was a crack. I couldn't find anything.

Take it to where it was winterized with your receipt and have them do the inspection.

That is where I would start. Doesn't sound like they did anything. What shop was it?

I was a local shop here in town that sells atv's tractors and boats. I contacted them today and they said to bring it by and they will check it out. We had a really cold winter as you know. But this has never happened before when its been winterized properly. This was my first time to use them. The place I have been going to shut down.

The impeller issue probably isn't their fault. Water freezing in the block is. It is super easy to drain the water out of a boat motor and takes 5 minutes.. IF that. I would start doing it myself in the future were I you.

Are you talking in the hoses? If I back flush the hoses, I think it will clean out any debris.

Also want to lower the trim all the way down if stored outside in the winter - lost a lower unit one time cause rainwater collected in the prop tilted up and froze
