    Educate me on windows

Starting my research on replacing 15-17 windows in the house. They’re builder grade and about 15 years old. Seriously thinking about replacing the two in the master with a sliding door to the backyard.

    Appreciate any and all advice.

    They are expensive.

We did 5 windows cost about $3000. Not looking forward to replacing the ones in our new house.

Just signed a contract on 15 windows at my house. Four are oversized, 2 sliders, 1 frosted glass 4x4 square, and the rest are pretty standard. All in was $6300 for single hung, double paned, argon filled, decorative inserts, and a lifetime warranty on glass breakage, installation and glass seal (argon filling).

I used Americas Choice Windows and actually had the owner in my house for about 2 hours. He was in 27 states at one point but decided to simplify things and only does a couple now. All the windows are manufactured in Dallas. They have an office up there too. Check them out.

I did mine last year. Love them. I did not want vinyl Windows. I have seen customers vinyl Windows sag. I installed aluminum wrapped vinyl. No sag. Look great

Windows XP no longer offers support from Microsoft. Windows 10 is nice.

Make sure you get a lowE coating. This reduces solar heat gain andin turn will reduce your electric bill in the summer.

You will notice your house holds temperature so much better. One of the best things I did to a 30 year old house. Metal insulated doors and metal roof were a close second.

I went with vinyl double hung double pane with argon. I used Window World. Contractors never started until 11am both days. First evening, windows were still open at 10pm. Wasn't very happy about that with a newborn at home. They needed a little encouragement to completely finish touch up items. 13 windows were a custom size. Paid $5600 I think. Had to replace some screens after hail damage - super easy just dropped them off and picked em up at lunch. As with most sub-contractors, they are the problem, not the company.

Our current house has aluminum windows. They advertised they were new in the sales listing (we bought it a year ago today) but they are not new. They also let a lot of air in. This house was vandalized from sitting empty and I think maybe they just replaced broken glass. Back in PA we had vinyl double hung windows and they were awesome. It was a small house, 900 sqft, and we paid $7800 for vinyl siding, 7 windows, and 1 door. I doubt that relates to Texas but I just wanted to share how much better the windows worked that old aluminum windows.

Educate yourself on where tempered glass is required. If I remember correctly it's required around doors and any water source such as kitchen sink and bath tubs.

I used Window World and have mixed reviews.

We had vinyl windows installed at our old house through Windows USA (it is a high pressure sales pitch) we loved the windows though and our installers were good! in and out in 2 days replacing 16 windows. no more drafts, no more outside noise, but their marketing is annoying as hell. They will call you and ask for references all the time...drove me crazy!! They finally quit calling and now I need new windows in my new house...haha I don't know if I want to call them or not!

This is my uncle's company and has 5 star reviews. They are a great company and will make sure you get what you want. n

We put in Pella windows and they have been great the last 20 years. They are wood on the inside and aluminum on the out side. They also can swivel inward to clean from the inside. Home Depot ordered them for us and they beat the Pella window store by half.

I saved a bunch of money by going direct to the source. Don't know if you have any West End Roofing stores in your area but they sell windows. They sent a salesman out to my house. They will sell you top of the line windows direct and then they can recommend approved installers. Very satisfied

I would recommend having a heat load done on your house and them compare how different windows impact that load. Lots of folks like to talk about how much more efficient new/different windows are but they never actually look at the payback period...and you have to assume $/kWhr is not going to stay fixed.

When we built our house the time to pay back the cost of the "high-end" windows versus the lower end was 86 yrs.......no thanks.
