We are planning to buy one, or something similar. We don't have a fence/gate so that means we are fair game for all the solicitors. Our door does not have a peephole so we either have to try to see the stoop from a window or just open the door. My wife works from home and I don't like her just opening the door without knowing who is there first.

Been thinking about getting one these after an odd experience on New Years. Wife and I were returning home from an early New Years celebration to avoid potential weather. We stopped by a friends house who lived a couple miles from us and was home alone. She didn't want to drive in the ice conditions. We had just finished a glass of bubbly and were sitting at the kitchen table when, Boom, Boom, Boom, someone pounded on the front door. Its wasn't a friendly knock but hard pounding. I went to the door which remained locked and bolted and had the following conversation through the door:

Me: "What can I help you with?"
Guy: "You need to open the door and let me use your phone"
Me: "Has there been an accident?"
Guy: "I'm lost. I need to call somebody."
Me: "Where are you trying to get to?"
Guy: (Pounding on door) "Just open the door!"
Me: "Who do you need to call, whats the number?"
GuyPounding on door) "Just let me in!"
Me: "I'm not opening the door and I'm not letting you in. You need to leave. I'm calling the police."

At that statement he made a sorta scream and took off running towards the main street through the neighborhood.

I've been looking at these for a while but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I had my truck broken into Saturday so I'm all about security these days.

So will I get an alert every time one of the kids passes my front door playing ball in the yard?

Mine is mounted perpendicular as well, still works great. I get video starting as people come up the steps even though they are approaching the camera from the side.

I have a split level front entry and my door bell is perpendicular to the front door. I got one of the cameras for Christmas and love it. It came with two wedges for mounting. You can angle it up,down, left,or right. I’ve got mine angled to the right and down and works just fine.

Here is a screen shot of a video.
What I like about it also is that you can zoom the videos.

Love mine and the stick up cams. Had some packages stolen off our porch recently and was able to email video direct to the detectives

You can turn notifications on or off. I have my doorbell on, backyard and driveway are normally off unless I’m out of town

On fridays I turn notifications off otherwise I’d have alerts every time the garbage truck passed by

Yes, and the cat, and the dog, and tree limbs you never really noticed before. It really helps to read the instructions and be strategic about placement before you put it up. Also read up on any settings you can make, we decided to go with security cameras and a camera doorbell with the security company.
