I actually won my first trip. Airfare, all daily rates, PH all included. I even had a dollar amount for trophy fees thrown in. As luck would have it, I also had a freak storm blow in and drop a lot of rain. It was all spot and stalk and it took all 7 days to kill my 3 animals. Kudu, Impala, and warthog. The owner and I really hit it off and I have been back 9 other times. This trip in 2019 will be my 11th hunt with him. I have killed 28 plains game as well as a lioness and Cape Buffalo. All of this was done with a bow. I shot the Cape in my avatar from 12 yards, this was after he had charged us twice. To say I am hooked is an understatement.

I couldnt make myself prioritize a deer lease that cost much more than that because I have too many other more important expenses I could be puting that same money towards over the next 10 yrs or so. I don’t think you will find anyone that will argue that the Africa value per $ is better than most anywhere in the world, but that still doesn’t mean it isn’t expensive ( even if you exclude 1/3 of the cost and act like they didn’t happen) like some folks want to.

It’s all relative on what you want to spend on your place. I don’t even have a place to hunt in Louisiana because I wanted to make my place nicer in Texas. I wanted to upgrade the camp house, deer blinds, feeders, and do some dozer work the last two years.

We have a group of eight going with Matsuri Safaris in June, 2018 for 10 days for Hunter's graduation and 18th birthday present. No way will we be paying close to $10,000.00 each, as long as we keep Hunter under control. We were fortunate and paid right under $1,000.00 for our airline tickets. I had our flight tracked. We were expecting to pay $2,175.00 each that week and I got an alert in my email about a change in price. Same flight from Houston to Atlanta to Jo'burg, but with a return flight from Jo'Burg to France, with a four hour layover, to Houston saved us $1,180.00 each. In fact, Hunter, a family friend and I are flying to Cape Town for two days and cage diving with Great Whites and it still is not $10K. The costs to hunt Africa also tends to be more spreadout over a two year period, if you book for enough ahead. If you book a year out, the initial deposit and airline tickets will need to be paid, animals, tips and dipping at the time of the hunt, but you won't be paying shipping costs and a taxi deposit for approximately 6-8 months after the hunt and final taxi bill 8 months to a year later. I am sure someone with more experience will correct me on that, but that was the way it worked for us in 2008 and with this trip.

We are by no means "wealthy", but we sure are "rich" in time spent and memories made on our many family hunting trips and vacations that we have taken throughout the years. Hunter will also be attending ATM in the fall of 2018 and living off campus, so we have lots of expenses ahead., but it did not deter us from making memories of a lifetime with her in RSA. We would not have done it if we were paying $30K+.

Now, if I can just get my shoulder healed by May, so I can start shooting again!! Someone hit me in the passenger side of my truck mid October and I had RCT surgery in November, which should give me just enough time to start shooting again.

I don't want someone to be detered from hunting African because it can be done for less than $10K. You will start planning your next trip on the plane ride home! It is addictive!

I get what you are saying. People acting like the trophy fees and hunt fees are the only cost included in an Africa hunt are dilusianal.

Please pardon my ignorance on the subject. Where is the best African destination? Kenya?

Not if you want to hunt. No hunting in Kenya

“Best” probably somewhere that really is for those with lots of money like Tanzania. Quality animals, old Africa hunting styles, and all truly wild LF game. Probably least corrupt also

^^ This ^^ but it really all depends on what you are looking to do. South Africa is just about totally geared toward hunting. There are outfitters everywhere. The only problem with that is, there are outfitters everywhere. You really need to do your research on the outfitter. Call all of the references, and ask questions. As mentioned before in this thread, there are outfitters that will advertise 10 animals for $6K, the only thing they don't tell you at the time you book is most will be culls or females.

South Africa can be done very easy with a little planning and discipline. Fact is, it will cost you as much as a decent deer lease (all total )but plan it for a couple years in advance slowly putting the funds away and it can be done.
