I'm guessing the teacher is just grading based off the answer key in the back of the book. I'd be curious to know if there's been any questioning of the teacher about what an incredibly poorly written question was presented. The author of the book needs a good skewering.

IMO based on a poorly written question, the teacher should give credit for: 13/16, or 13/1. Just my pre-k level opinion.

      Available slices-16
      Served slices-13......

      Was the teacher a female?

I sent her an email asking to explain why 13/16 wouldn't be considered a correct answer. No reply as of yet.

She is a sweet lady and actually graduated HS with my wife so I've known her for 20+ years. I have full confidence in her abilities as a teacher. But this one threw me and I had to question it. Doesn't make much sense to try and trick a 2nd grader who is still trying to learn basic math.

She still is a female, but not sure what that has to do with anything.

I have a 2nd grader and 4th grader, the math only gets more frustrating as they get older, the way they teach it anyway. I think they call it "common core" and I am not a fan.

13/8 is greater than one or greater than 100%. Ask the teacher how one can serve greater than 100% of the total available slices of pizza?

Or perhaps the question intended to ask the fraction of pizzas that were served.

Besides which, i doubt the Chef served any pizza. The Chef has people to do the serving.

My wife is a city manager, but even she will tell you that (most) females have a hard time with mathematics..
Of course, she (the teacher), may have simply gone 'by the book'.

My daughter is in 7th grade. My son is in 5th grade. Over the elementary school careers, I've many of their worksheets that were very poorly written—poorly written to the point that you couldn't discern what was being asked or there were multiple correct answers.

Here I would have said 13/16 but see how someone else could get 1 5/8.

Then I look at the answer key and sure enough it says 13/8 or 1 5/8 are the correct answers.

So no, I'm not smarter than a 2nd grader.
There are two ways to look at it:

                        1. How many slices were served?
                        2. How many pizzas were served?

                        Answers:

                        1. 13/16
                        2. 1 5/8

The question seemed to be talking about slices, but the answer they expected was in pizzas.

T.C.E.Q. does the same thing on their tests. The key is to decipher the question

Yep Shane I agree, BUT they did not ask for pizzas. they specifically asked for slices hence the only truly correct answer would be 13/16...

My daughter has her masters in mathematics and statistics, teaches college level Trig, Algebra, Calculus and Statistics... I showed it to her and she immediately said 13/16. I then showed her this thread... Her comment was, "This is why I have college students that cannot add, subtract, multiply and divide... I don't stand a chance at getting them to understand the principles of algebra, Trig or other higher level mathematics... Her oldest son is in the first grade and comes home very frustrated at some of the things his teachers are trying to teach him that are dead wrong... My daughter and the principal are on a first name basis... Parents had better be VERY involved in their children's education!

Common core is BS! If you have 2 pizzas and you serve out of those 2 pizzas. The 2 pizzas become a whole. Therefore you have served a fraction of the 1 total amount of pizza making the real answer 13/16 of the total pizza.

                              Common core is BS

                                13/8 or 1 5/8 pizzas.
question asked for slices served, right? so 13/16 should be correct.
As deer hunters it's a habit to measure in eighths.
