How to stop puppy from chewing on posts?

We have cedar posts (10"x10") on our back porch and our 9mo puppy is destroying them! These things cost a small fortune and are heavily trimmed into the house so the repair job is already going to be expensive. Trying to keep it to a minimum! How can I get the puppy to quit chewing on them? She's now taking a liking to the trim around the rear door as well. Is there a spray or something that really works? Thanks.

First, whip her and tell her no sternly when she starts to do it. If that doesn’t begin to work, pour tobacco on them.

There is a product you can spray on wood that must really taste bitter to animals. It is designed to prohibit horses from chewing on the rails in their stalls. It also kept my lab from chewing on wood as well. Good luck.

Bitter apple spray from a pet shop.

        Tin flashing.

        Antler chew toys.

        Good luck.................

Habanero hot sauce on the places she chews. Works like a charm.

Are you just leaving her out there all day with nothing to do?

As mentioned you can spray stuff on them to discourage it, but you need to determine the underlying problem which is its probably bored. What breed of dog are we talking about? At 9 months it should have already been through teething, but its possible that its still ongoing.

Agree. Sounds like a bored puppy to me. Get her some chew toys. My JRT also loves the squeaky toys so try those as well. You can use the squeaky toys to wear her butt out as well. My JRT will retrieve them for as long as I will throw them. I spent 2hrs outside with her chasing it one evening. She wears me out sometimes and I’m the one that needs a nap. LOL

Post up a free puppy thread in the classifieds and delete this thread. Problem solved.

My old shepard loved tabasco sauce. I'd pour it on the posts for my patio cover and he would lick every drop off of them. I wound up giving him a 2' piece of 2X4 to play with.

Yup, my lab is now 3 or so and loves to eat/chew any and everything. I leave hunks of wood and he'll chew them up...

I figured if he wanted to chew wood, give him some wood. Kept him from chewing on the house and things.
