    Another TBH Braintrust ?

Ok engineers, I need your help for a project we’re creating for our geometry students. On a winch up feeder what’s the minimum distance from the bottom of the legs to the center so that we maintain stability (assuming we’re using a 55 gallon barrel)?

    8' 6 1/32"

    No idea.

      Need tripod height.
base distances will vary with the height of the poles intersection.

Well, we’re gonna be using 14’ legs and are having them make feeder unit a minimum height of 6’ high.

This was my thought as well. I would guess you actually are looking for the degree of angle rather than the distance. The angle can remain constant no matter how tall you choose to build it and the distance can then be calculated based on that.

There is a thread on here somewhere where someone posted the angle they used for the top of the tripod.

              The answer is C

We’re going to have them determine the angle options based on the other parameters (height and distance from leg to center directly below feeder).

There will be a range of options (small though it may be) based on those parameters.

                    22.5 degrees.

In the real world this is a problem that requires multiple calculations.

Not sure what you mean by stability - i.e. tipping over or the legs buckling.

The former are determined by calculating overturning moments and the latter is a governed by the Euler equation.

                          4 x's barrel diameter

Uhh, who cares. I use 13 foot legs and they work great!

8 degree angle from bottom of feeder
