Yep, I'll just make this a learning experience. I just wish I could for once learn a lesson but still recover the deer! Another thing I have learned between this buck, and a doe I lost last year, is that when a deer has it's head down, their vitals shift back quite a bit (compared to the location of the shoulder). When they start their duck with their head down and shrug their shoulders, they shift back even further. I am going to really start paying attention to the location of the up-curve of the brisket as that never changes in regards to the vitals. The legs and shoulders can move all kinds of directions, but if your arrow passes through the boiler room about 6 to 12 inches back of where the brisket turns up, you should be good.

I think a good dog would have found that deer if you had that much blood for 200 yards they should have been able to take the track from that point even if there was no more visible blood.

Dogs are highly overrated. Especially those little sissy lacys. A good GSD would find it.

        All I needed was buzzards.

Well this story had a happy ending this morning. The buck I wounded showed up in the same spot this morning. He couldn't handle the .300 Win mag this time. The arrow entrance wound had healed up nicely. You can see it just below the bullet exit wound. I found my broadhead and piece of arrow just under the opposite skin where the neck meets the body. Looks like the arrow went in at the perfect broadside location, then took an upward and forward angle. It almost went all the way through his body. The deer had air pockets under his skin throughout his entire body which means that I hit at least one lung on the bow shot. Tough sun of a gun. This is how he died this morning with piece of his lung hanging on the fence when he crashed into it.

Tight against the shoulder just above the elbow....Should have been lethal.
