That's pretty cool. We have a ladder stand/area named after one of those things on our lease because of the very same type of story. I haven't seen one personally though.

I shoot them on sight. They are far from harmless and love to eat plywood, plus they are no friends to dogs who always investigate it and wind up with a face/nose full of quills.
See what they did to one of my best ground blinds?

I have never seen one and definitely never imagined they climb trees!

They can scare the crap when you crawl in a tree stand pitch dark and realize you are sharing the same limb

i used to think they were harmless. now i shoot them without thinking twice! when the "ring" a tree by eating the bark all the way around the trunk, that tree is going to die. we have far too few up here to let the porcupines have their way with them!

I have had as many as 6 at one feeder eating corn. There are a few dead trees around there as well. The land owner said to leave them alone so I did. She now has dogs and after a $350 vet bill for quill removal from one she said shoot them all. I have killed 3 since then and will shoot them on sight, gotta try to keep the landowner happy

I may sound stupid but I honestly didn't know they climbed like that. I shoot everyone I see anyway, I had one get after my dog once and it wasn't pretty.

A big part of their diet is tree inner bark, so yes they will climb

I've always wanted to have one mounted.

Hit one with my truck down at my Ranch and took a picture and sent it to my Taxidermist to ask how much to mount. His reply: "DO NOT BRING ME A PORCUPINE" LOL

I have a sweet deal with a landowner to hunt coyotes, only requirement for me is to shoot every porcupine i see no exceptions. Apparently his calves always seem to get a little to curious every year and 2 or 3 end up getting popped by one of them.
