I have an old traeger, and love it, but mine is the older version with heavier duty guage steel. Now they are lighter gauge steel and I'd go with the Yoder unless you can find a traeger on resale.

I haven't put my hands on the Traeger 850 that you are looking at, but I did look at other Traegers and was not impressed with the quality for the price compared to other smokers out there. But for about the same money as the 850, Yoder 640 hands down. 213lbs vs 335lbs. The Yoder is built to last. I looked at all of the different manufacturers and picked the Yoder even though it was more expensive that the others I was looking at.

The Yoder a very versatile with the Grill Grate sear plates. (buy them from Yoder, they are made special to fit perfectly) I made the best fajitas/carne asada I have ever eaten on those sear plates and the recipe from TBH. Not sure if the Traeger has the sear option.

Get the optional 2 piece heat diffuser with door. Makes searing/grilling a lot easier.

For a cover, get the Ravenna Grill cover. It is very nice cover and 1/3 the price of the Yoder cover. I bought the XL size, but I think the Large would work. You have to fold the smoke stack down, but you have to do that with the Yoder cover too.

Don't mess with the door thermometers option, get a good wireless thermometer and don't look back. Maverick ET-73 or a Fireboard for more bells and whistles. The Yoder has built in probe port.

There is a included second rack that isn't in the before brisket pic.

Treager isnt even in the ball park with it. id compare the treager with the Rec Tec.

I did talk to the sales guy last week and its a 12 week wait on a 640 with a comp cart.

After months of research, I went with the Yoder. No regrets after about a hundred pounds of pellets through it.

It doesn't have some of the features some other brands have but it is built like a tank and cooks great.

Here is the last brisket I did on my Yoder. No other smoke tubes or accessories.

I have a Blazin Grill Works Grand Slam and love it. I looked at all the others and the GS best fit my needs. RecTec and Yoder are good pits also.

This would be a no brainer for me...Yoder all the way. My 2nd choice would be Rec Tec.

Yes I have the 820D from academy. I really wanted the Rec Tec and looked at many others, but couldn't pass up the 820D when it was on sale. I've cooked just about everything on it and not a single problem. It doesn't have a fancy PID controller line the higher end pellet smokers, but is plenty accurate.
