A good friend of mine said it best..."its a good place to be from as long as you never have to go back". Its sucks! For whats its worth Midland is WAY better then Odessa.
I was born in Odessa... haven't been back since about the 4th grade.
Unfortunately it's not just in Midland/Odessa brother.
Oh I know. But it booms here harder than most anywhere. Problem is....the trash didn't leave in this last bust. That's why I left. I lived on the east side of town. Good area. I can't count how many times my truck got broke into.
There are some good people there, it's just not a place I want to be. I put in my 18 years there and don't ever see me self going back. Half the people I went to high school with are now in DFW. The other half, are still there.
It's looking like I may just commute on the weekends. Work the week and come home on the weekends and yes, I have to do this as I am unemployed at the moment...
OP - are you the guy who lives on coast and been looking for oilfield job for 5 months? I'm in environmental consulting and in odessa/midland 6-8x / year week at a time. I don't think much of the place. Roustabout/roughneck central. There are nicer areas there but as a whole I could not fathom living there. And to whomever said there is still a lot of tail there- have another. Or 15. I saw rough chicks to accompany roughnecks. Hotels are $150+ for low end and as mentioned earlier chit service at restaurants. Oilfield money might be good but you will need to learn to like that environment. I can't wait to hit the road home every time I work there
definately would not want to live out there. It would have to be some extreme money to get me to move perminately, and I don't even have kids. Just not a place I would prefer to live.
I think the traffic comments are funny. What we Midlanders talk about is how bad the traffic is in DFW/Houston! Traffic is bad in Midland at 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Even then, it still only takes 15-20 minutes to get across town.
My family eats out all the time. I would never wait for an hour to eat at a restaurant anywhere, Midland or otherwise. So, I don't understand the "hour long waits" comments. Lots of new restaurants opening, all the time.
Healthcare - I can speak for the general surgeons, urologists, obstetricians and anesthesiologists: You won't find better, anywhere. Primary care is tight, though; sometimes hard to find an open practice. There are a ton of new, "urgent care" type facilities, though.
Schools are so-so. Decent grocery stores.
I can't imagine a more convenient airport than the one we have. I can leave my house and be checked in at the gate, sometimes, in thirty minutes.
Midland is an easy place to live.
I lived there in the early 90's, we liked it. But it sounds like it has changed a lot since then due to the huge oil activity. I will say this, I have lived a lot of places, both in the US and internationally. Every one of then has plusses and minuses (some more than others). If you are the type of person that focuses on the positives and accepts the negatives, you can live anywhere and be happy. You may not stay there forever, it is just another adventure in your journey.
