While I haven't tested the Slinky idea, I would definitely use those to ward off squirrels (and coons).
I watched a squirrel one time for 30 minutes just playing on the leg of my feeder - he would scamper up the leg and then bear hug it and slide back down. Over and over again. He was having a blast.

Have to use a metal feeder and certainly put wires in metal conduit. Also looks like your spin plate/motor box is sitting pretty low and luring them in with a nice buffet. Eliminator spin plates can save you a good bit of time, money, feed, and frustration as well.
