So the lease I am on this year is starting to really get to me. I have been hunting for a LOT of years and I have NEVER had as many issues with a feeder being torn up like I have this year. I have had to replace the entire motor and housing due to the Squirrels and coons tearing up the first one. I even installed a cage to keep them out of it. Next was the Wiring to the Solar Charger that they have destroyed three times. Showes up this past weekend to find the wiring torn up again and THIS.... Who has ever seen this before???
Not only had they tore up the wiring again, they chewed a hole in the side of the feeder...... I am at Wits End.....
If the lid is plastic, they will chew through that too.
Heck I even had a plastic lid sitting on a metal lid to keep the rain off and the morons chews holes all in the plastic lid just to find the metal underneath.
About 10 years ago I had a plastic Moultrie feeder and one day I was getting ready to fill it so I climbed up the ladder and when I popped the lid off, a squirrel came flying out right by my face. How I didn't fall off the ladder I don't know. The squirrel had chewed a hole right through the lid on the opposite side that I didn't see until after. I retired that feeder. As was mentioned, you need metal conduit over the solar panels wires but you also need to tie the metal conduit up good or the coons will hang all over it and probably eventually break it.
HEB last year had 55 Gallon drum metal feeders for $99. Some of the Buccees sells the same feeder for $160. I know the one in Baytown carries them, I bought some there. No reason to buy those cheap plastic ones. I did for years, but got tired of the squirrels, coons, and hogs destroying them.
Best one was one time I had a six gallon feeder hanging in the tree. Put a metal lid on it, to stop the coons. I guess they chewed through the rope and it crashed down. The hogs then destroyed the whole thing. Parts were everywhere. Even the battery was chewed up. Its like they are working together......
