And these people with the hype over the eclipse, have no idea what the big deal is with a 182" low fence deer with split G2s. Its all perspective!

Is the sun any brighter during the eclipse? Id guess if you went out and looked at the sun now, with whatever you planned on using, and your don't melt, your good.

Length of exposure----you aren't gonna look directly at the sun for 2-3-4-5 minutes today, but with the dimmer light of the eclipse, you are risking your sight. I have a black floater in each eye--not from sun-gazing--and believe me, it is a major distraction while hunting. Each time I move my eyes, the black spots move and my mind automatically shouts "Deer-Hog".

Don't do it, not worth it, get your #14 protection and use it or don't look.

This was posted on FB by a friend.

My dad is a fairly well known optometrist. Here are his thoughts :

Solar eclipse: Important, unless you have special certified solar eclipse glasses the only safe way to view the eclipse is via TV.
Even Momentary viewing can leave lasting scars in your line of sight, in other words, wherever you look, you will have one or more blind spots. The sun simply destroys the vision receptors (cones) and (rods).
Every eclipse there are thousands of folks who lose their central sight, indeed a severe deficit caused by a burned retina that cannot regenerate.
Warn the children and have them warn and remind their friends.
            Watch it on TV!!!

In my opinion a number #14 would be way to dark........ I personally would stick with an 8 or 10. The intensity of light from the welding arc is much greater than the sun.

Just a cool natural thing that happens pretty rarely in a human lifetime. Next chance to see one will be in 2045, I believe.

Print this out on an 11x17 paper. Hold 4 " from your nose. Move from left to right slowly, using long blinks. You're welcome.

Thanks, I'll take the glass out and look. All stores here are sold out of the glasses, as is Amazon. The issue is cheap glasses that do not meet the optical density requirements are being sold by dirtbags.

                      NASA says #14 density filter.

I picked up some glasses from a vision store, can't wait to use them! We're about an hour and a half from the path of totality & not TOO far from where it's supposed to be most intense over in KY, so I'm considering making the drive if I can skip out of work for a bit.

It's a pretty cool phenomenon! You guys that don't get it, fine. I don't see why y'all like Justin Beiber, Barbara Streisand or Liberache either...

You can't compare the Arc from welding or a torch to the UV light of the sun. It's not just the brightness that will blind you....

They are gonna let the kids at school use welding helmets.

I have the solar powered self darkening helmet. Brighter the arc, the darker it becomes. Hope it's enough.
