    Welding helmet question for eclipse

I have a Jackson welding helmet I got with an inexpensive mig welder. It says Class 3 and 4 inside. I read that # 12 or darker is required, but can't find any conversion information and it isn't worth frying my retinas on Monday.

Does anybody the conversion, if the question makes sense?

I'll be looking with a #9. Not sure where someone came up with #12.

I remember years ago where we had a partial eclipse and I used my hood with a #10 lens. Didn't burn my eyes out then!!!
But again, I didn't look at it for a long time either!!
I will be using my hood again and the #10.

I would think you wouldn't be able to see anything with a 12.

I am not surprised this answer came from you.

The number on the helmet is for the helmet, not the lens. Those lens can be taken out. Generally the lens will be marked along the edge. If the lens is not variable, I would say it is a #10.
NASA says that at shade #14 is needed. Of course all of the welding companies are sold out of #14. I would not be looking with a 10. I have a hood with a 10 and I can see right through it. I have another hood with #13 that I will be using.
                    Good luck.

We used a welding lens when I was a kid. Not sure what it was rated for. Maybe that's why I can't see now..

Ya, we did the paper trick about 40 years ago in grade school. You can tell how impressed I was with it, no?

What are you really hoping to see

Done this before and seen folks in Puerto Rico drill small holes in a magazine and use a ribber band around their head as a make shift welding helmet no lie but I weld with a #10 lens almost everyday don't see why it wouldn't work with an eclipse
