I'd say mud cat by the color. Put your thumb in his mouth to pick him up. If he makes you say "uncle", it's a yellow mudcat...

Gafftop, or a Wales. The lack of the 8th set of whiskers is throwing me off.

You've obviously never had a spawning channel bite down on your appendages then

Ain't never been a mudcat with eyes that big! They have beedie little eyes. They are usually about that color, but so are channels in some waters... Also, never been a mudcat with a forked tail either... That is absolutely a channel catfish, and a fine specimen of one too.

And a flathead catfish, (AKA op, opelussas, Yellow cat) common in Texas rivers/lakes is a predatory catfish. It is not a scavenger catfish like the channel, blues, or even mudcats... The flathead is protected in Texas too... They have separate regulations too. They do not count as part of your 25 fish limit of catfish. They have a 5 fish limit of their own and minimum length is 18" instead of the 12" limit for blues/channel catfish...

It is amazing the confusion and bad information in this thread!

You would be hung from a tall tree with a short piece of rope for callin a flathead/alp/op a "mudcat" round these parts! And for what it's worth, it was a channel cat from post #1. Good Huntin, and God Bless, Rusty

It's amazing how many sportsmen on here are calling a channel cat a mud cat lol. This is embarrassing.
