    It most definitely is not a normal coat change. Wrong time of the year for that, unless he has some sore of hormonal or pituitary malfunction. This is some sort of skin abnormality, of which there can be several. None are very serious and clear up with time. A mite infestation or Demodex mange is a possibility, as is a fungal infection (ringworm, although uncommon in deer). Best bet though is a bacterial condition called dermatophilosis, which can be spread to other deer and even people, but is nothing at all to worry about as it runs its course and the deer is fine. Once cooler weather hits, and the normal coat change does happen, all should be well in the deer world.

              It is called Molting. Completely normal and very common. They shed winter to summer coats. Some do it later than normal. No issues with that critter.

                This! I see deer every day, up close, and never seen one molt of winter hair like that. Most of the time like a dog or cat, it is a slow process. My $.02
