I have seen a deer with mange and it looked a lot like this one. We contacted local game dept and they confirmed and suggested we not eat the deer.

In East Texas it's call Q-beam burn.

Seriously, it's nothing to worry about. I'm sorry I couldn't resist. The heat is getting to me.

Do these posts mean this is normal for deer to do this? I've seen them shed winter/summer coats, but this looks different to me. It's the ONLY deer I have that looks like this. Just looking for answers. I will try to contact the GW and biologists today.

I believe that deer is perfectly normal and would be very surprised if it was not.
All deer are different and he might just be the first of the group to change like some bucks are the last to drop their antlers.

This happens when there are no spikes. Time to start manage deer coats

Yes, it's normal. It's not mange. Both forms of mange that animals get would have lesions as well as hair loss at that level. I saw probably 10 deer with the same general look this past Saturday as they begin shedding their coats. They'll look like crap for a couple weeks and be fine as the hair regrows...

Thanks! I'm use to hunting in Gods Country (East Texas). I'm still learning the deer out West.

Yes it's normal. No need to call a biologist or a Game Warden.

Thanks Chance. This one pictured is just a lot uglier than most others so I was concerned it could be mange. Glad to know it isn't .

Might be radiation burn. Probably a UFO landed somewhere near it.
