    Diy septic system

Has anyone ever made a septic system out of a 55 gallon barrel? How did it work and what all was needed. Thanks

This is what we use for the trailer at camp...used an auger for the hole.

~Put about 2-3" of rocks / gravel on the bottom. This helps.

~Cut hole / remove one side of bottom of drum (we used those blue poly drums)

~I bought a 4" threaded plumbing cap with screw on cover & cut a small hole to fit & epoxied in place to make water proof.

~Place drum in hole where the top is a little above being flush & filled in sides with dirt / packed it in.

Unscrew the cap & dump...works great. If we are gonna be there for a stretch, I'll dump the grey every day. Before leaving, dump the black and flush hoses / finish off with grey. We have two showers on our park model & having two drums is kinda nice.

We did in the Hill country And it worked fine for deer camp. We did field line with rock picked up out of the draw.

Most soil won't need a drum. Just let the bugs and earth do there jobs.

It's going to be a septic for a small building with 1 toilet and 2 sinks.

The best thing to use are the 275 gallon totes. Punch a bunch of holes in the sides and bottom and stick it in the ground.

Run the grey water out on the ground. Black in the hole

Had one for years that worked ok. But if you could go bigger like a 275 gallon tote mentioned, I would. And as stated run the grey water to the pasture. Only problem that really comes up with them is too much use. Just not a lot of room for the solids after a couple years of use.

I have not used this on a RV septic as described, but a buddy says to also use Riddex like you would on your home septic system? We use it religiously at our home septic. What say 'ye GS..would it help or should I just use the chemical "break downs" that dealers say helps on RV holding tanks? My TBH son was lazy and never put a external holding tank separate from his RV and now...well, you can guess...problems!

I used plastic drum at camper spot and 275 gal tote at my bigger camp. Both are set up field lines which allows bugs work on the solids in the tank and the grey water flow out

We still used riddex and dont know of any negative affects. All it does is create a bacteria to break down the solids. You can flush dry yeast for the same results.

I did one out of two blue plastic barrels in line with each other, the second being 6"-8" lower than the first. I ran field line out from there. Its been in place for 17 years on an old cabin.

We had a cesspool at work for about thirty years. They aren't legal any longer but neither are the totes or drums. Anything will work for a minimal use situation. If you have a shower stall just let it run on top of the ground, otherwise you might overload a tiny system like a barrel or tote.

A cesspool is the cheapest and easiest thing to build. Just cover it well and make it so some dummy doesn't drive over it.

Used a 55 gallon drum with a field line with gravel in a cabin at our lease for 15 years. Never a problem. We always used toilet paper recommended for septic systems
