Congrats on the nice trout and good trip. Went last year for first time with some guys that have made several trips. We also are going again this year on the VI in October. Where did your group do most of your fishing? Our mothership anchored off that radio tower and we fished mostly down below Katrina pass. Really got into the big reds one morning all the way down on the south end. This is also where I saw the most sharks. Had one probably 6' or bigger almost get to my stringer before I saw it. And this was in like knee deep or so water. Might just take your basket advice.

We anchored near redfish point, and various boats went different directions. My group actually went through Katrina pass and went back up the gulf side to about even with the tower, then fished both ways up and down the beach from there. If you're an experienced wader and don't get too bothered by sharks, it's a great wade. If sharks make you nervous, better go fish somewhere else.... Early in the morning, the fish were right in the first gut. We were almost standing on the beach for the first hour or two, then moved out to the second gut for the rest of the morning... Others went about 2 or 3 miles north on the inside and fished a bar that was off the grass line but paralleled it. They drifted the bar in the boat and caught just as many trout as we did in the surf, but generally a bit smaller. The thing about that spot is they also caught a bunch of redfish too. Probably half of the fish we caught were caught on topwaters... I started out with them, but I just didn't get good hookups. Almost constant blow ups every cast and a hook up about every third or fourth cast... Switched to soft plastics and fished them like buzz baits and it was every cast for a while... Bite then switched to a bottom feed when the sun got up a bit. It was like worm fishing for bass... VERY slow retrieve bumping the bottom and a little lift then fall... That fall would get a strike very consistently. When the tide went slack, the bite stopped or slowed dramatically.
