Thanks for the answers and advice. I feel once I figure out the duck hunting down here in SA/Port A area I will get serious about getting a pup. I have checked the websites of the breeders and trainers mentioned and it will be hard to decide which one to go with. Thanks again and good hunting to y'all!

Shiner is the only silver lab I have ever been around. I can back Brandon up 100% on his pups drive. I'm hoping my new black lab puppy I got recently has the drive his silver does

I'd say that is pretty accurate. Lots of people get a lab puppy and aren't ready for the first couple years......just like having a toddler in the house.....tons of energy, mischief, and you have to watch them like a hawk. Personality just like a toddler too. I love them just have to be ready for it.

I am guessing you have a Boykin. I didn't think they were great swimmers and were able to deal with the cold water as well as a lab.

Yeah she's a Boykin. 1 year old. Thanks his will be he first season actually. She is phenomenal in the field right now. She swims really well, but I dove hunt a few times a year and duck hunts rice and marsh so she won't be swimming deep water.

I haven't heard much about them. Labs for ducks, then pointers and setters for upland. What is their personality, trainability like? Man you guys that live near DFW and H-town have some good waterfowl land to hunt compared to the SA area. Oh, I just noticed the Bull Sprigs in your picture. I must say I am extremely jealous of ya, and I just heard you can only take 1 Pintail a day this year. I don't think I will ever kill one now, LOL.

I think this might be a learned behavior. I don't think they are born gun shy.

Any behavior in a pup that might lead you to see they are gun shy or is this a hit or miss type deal?

I think a lot depends on the expectations you have for your finished dog. Personally I have the best luck with good pedigreed dogs and will continue to go that route. Money well spent.

I have heard stories from good trainers on dogs with certain traits that they tend to have issues training and stay away from when choosing their dogs. I tend to rely on that info.

For the most part, I don't think retrievers are born gun shy. However there may be some exceptions. Im not an expert by any means. I believe a good pedigree is essential. I did my research and bought my Boykin from reputable breeders that started their operation from a great bloodline. Boykin breeders are really good about protecting the breed. My dogs parents and grandparents are hunters. The breeders facility was top notch which led me to buy from them.

Boykins are much different to train than labs. You can't "beat it into them". You will hurt their feelings and shut them down if you do. My little girl loves to please me. It's pretty awesome to see how she can turn on/off "hunting mode" and also be an inside family dog. I had her trained actually from a trainer that's here on TBH duckdogtrainer. He understood the differences in training a lab vs a Boykin and did a phenomenal job with her.

Anyhow, I was joking when I said you should get a Boykin instead. Labs are awesome, and King of the duck blind, I just wanted something different that matched what I was looking for. Good luck!

What we did with my dog is start by banging pots and pans together while she is eating. Then, my sister stayed with her in the house and I went outside and shot a gun, every time I shot, my sister gave her a treat. Has worked with all of our dogs so far

I have raised all three color's. My rating by color and male or female. Female, for training ease and not a hyper mess, hunting and family dog, Chocolate, Yellow and Black. My $.02.
My last dog, ABBY, 14 yrs old, don't think I could go through loosing another great friend like her.

Took me a little while to finally pull the trigger but here is my new English Yellow Lab pup. Thanks for the advice and input. I plan on training him myself using the Wild Rose training program as a guide.
