    Mechanics

First off I am nowhere near a mechanic, I can do all the simple fluid changes and stuff like that. We have a 1981 cj7 jeep that has been setting for about 8 years and yesterday we decided to finally get it going again. I put new spark plugs in and our boats marine battery (all I had) and it turns, but seems like it doesn't have enough to crank the engine. That would be due to the battery correct?

More than likely. Put a battery charger on it or jumper cables and see what it does.

Sounds like battery or starter. By marine do you mean deep cycle battery?

If it has been sitting that long, before I try and crank it I would change the oil and filter and put a new fuel filter in. I assume you put fresh gas in it.

Might possible need a carb rebuild as well.

Deep cycle battery might not have the cold cranking amps needed to start it. And i agree with the 4 posts above

Yeah deep cycle battery. And yes I changed the oil and oil filter. And yes I put fresh gas in it. I did have jumper cables on the battery, but it still acted weak for it.
The carb will be the next thing I do (probably by a new one), but for right now I am just trying to get it cranking.

That's the problem. Deep cycles don't have the amps needed to get it turning fast enough.

Thanks. Im gonna get a new battery for it then and try it out. This is going to be a big learning project, good news is that it looks very simple compared to what's under the hood now days.

Put a new cap and rotor on the distributor too

Shoot some oil in the cylinders and crank it over without the plugs in it for a few rotations.

                            Excellent suggestion...

The beauty of the older Jeeps is that they are simple but Jeep stands for Just Empty Every Pocket.
