    Moving to Midland? Pros/Cons?

I was offered an opportunity to move to Midland from Houston for work. My wife would have to find a job out there (she's in HR), but the big thing is we don't know anything Midland. No kids to consider at this point, but its hard to think about uprooting to a new place. What are things to consider about living out there? Have home prices jumped? Is there a good community to join?

We've moved 4 times chasing the oilfield. I would say that the first move is the hardest. I currently live in Midland and am about to relocate to San Antonio. A few things to consider about midland.

      1. midland has most anything you need, with the exception of a good bowshop or gun store.
      2. Midland is very easy to get around
      3. There are a lot of really good people in midland
      4. Midland is 4 hours from dang near anything
      5. The climate in midland is nice with the exception of the wind
      6. The wind sucs
      7. The dust sucks
      8. The housing costs suc and are only getting worse.
      9. There are limited things to do in Midland for entertainment
      10. If you work in the oilfield there is no better place to be than the Permian.
      11. Public schools in midland are some of the worst in the state. Anyone that can, sends their kids to private schools.

Compared to Houston-no traffic, crime, pollution, humidity, rain.

You lose access to the Gulf, but you're just 5 hours from the mountains. It's just different, but a quality of life upgrade compared to Houston, IMO.

The lack of humidity is a good thing.

I have lived here most my life. Not much to do here for outdoors people like myself who love to hunt ad fish. All that is a drive aways.

Malls suc, both the Odessa amd Midland malls. Lots of places to eat at as we have most the major chains. We don't have nice parks etc.

I am not trying to discourage you but why lie? Moving from H town to here would be a plus though as I could never live where your at now. I always call this place the "armpit of the world". Best of luck in your move

I have lived many places, in the US and abroad (Midland included). There are pluses and minuses in all of them. If you focus on the negatives (like a lot of people do) you will always be miserable, no matter where you are.

For me the question is a more about family and career. If it is a good move for those reasons, do it. Obviously you have to consider the move package, is it fair? Midland is a place to live, enjoy the new experiences that are more available to you while you are there, then enjoy the next place.

I was born and raised an hour and a half north of Midland and now we've lived in Midland the last 5 years. Personally we love it out here, family is close. It's a bigger town than I would like to live in but it's small enough you still see people out and about you know. A couple of good concert venues, Wagner Noel has alot of different concerts. Theres a couple hole in the wall eating joints that are good. In the summer there's a few events in downtown midland where they show movies and stuff to enjoy with the family, and there's a drive in theater. We live outside of town and don't go into town much. I'd rather be in the knife shop or messing around the house or hanging out at friends houses than deal with crowds/people. We do have to drive a bit to do much hunting or fishing, but we don't mind.

There are no Pros, nothing to do, but it's better than Odessa.

The lack of humidity has to be THE ONLY good thing about that place.

Plenty of good jobs. That is a big plus for most people in West texas

I personally like odessa better than midland. If you end up being there when you have kids you can send your kids to Grady tx school or Garden city school. Gradys bus picks kids up in midland. Both 6man schools. As far as entertainment, not much to do.
