I've been here about 3 years now and my fiance moved up in January. Since you and your wife would both be up here, it's honestly not all that bad. Contrary to what most people say about Midland, we actually enjoy it and have decided to stay for a good while. For what it's worth, she's originally from San Antonio and I'm originally from Victoria so it was a bit of a change. It is about 4 hours to any big town but the roads are pretty wide open so it's usually an easy drive. I'm able to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner at home because the town itself is easy to get around and there's no traffic. I would look heavily at a good neighborhood as that will make your life a lot more enjoyable...this might mean spending a little more on a house than you'd think. Prices are going anywhere from $120/sq ft to $160+/sq ft and appear to keep climbing. We're about to move to an older neighborhood that has mature trees (hard to find in midland) and a very family oriented feel. The town is getting better about things to do and more businesses are starting to move in. The airport flies direct to Houston, Dallas, Vegas, and a few others. The town has just about anything you need.

The hunting and fishing is more difficult...I will admit that. I haven't hit the coast in about 3 years.

Good/popular neighborhoods are Grasslands, Meadowland, Los Patios, Saddle Club area, Green Tree, Old Midland area, etc. There are a few others but those are what come to mind.

If you want a little bit of land (1+ acre), there is some to be had on the north side of town but Greenwood is pretty popular also.

        Pros:
        Easy place to live.
My commute to work is ten minutes or less. Can't put a price on that.
I can leave my house, sometimes, and be standing at my flight gate at the airport in thirty minutes. Where else can you do that?
        Conservative town.
Within driving distance of the Hill Country in one direction or the Rockies in the other.
More and more restaurants and food trucks every day.
        Two, great HEB stores.
        Great hospital facility.
        Good churches.

Pro. Midland is east 1 hour from the largest old forest in the United States.

Lots of good people on Odessa/midland.

Lots of people will just invite you in and just cook. I do it all the time.

The best thing about Midland is the Barn Door Steakhouse in Odessa.

So let me get this straight.... if I am ever in Midland there is a chance someone might just waive me down, invite me in and whip up a home cooked meal. That's kinda cool.

People from Midland don't want to be seen in Odessa!

I grew up in Odessa, so take it from me YOU DO NOT WANT TO DRINK THE WATER AND LOCK UP YOUR PETS AS THEY WILL GET STOLEN, pother than that Midland is a pretty nice town with great people. Good luck to you.

I lived here for 5 years, and moved to Lubbock 2 1/2 years ago. I still work in Midland Monday-Friday, but commute most of the time. You could pay me to move back, but no one has offered me that magic number yet. It'll be easily double my current figure.

If your finances allow, then move to the Greenwood area. Slightly outside of town, and the only area I'd consider if I had to come back. There's several nicer areas, but they're overpriced for what they offer. Its slightly more country, and a little less city.

Someone mentioned no gun or bow shops that are decent. S&K Arms is pretty nice gun shop, but they stock only higher end components and arms. TMP does as well, but caters a bit more to the middle of the road crowd as well. Both are reasonably priced. Ally Outdoors will be opening soon as well, and TMP will be partnering with them. It will be a 57-60k square foot indoor range, gun and bow shop, and bar as well. It will be the nicest and largest of its sort in the state of Texas.
