My father was a retired Captain. Combat Engineer with what was at the time a "Pathfinder" unit (I want to say he was attached to 3/5). He saw combat at the early stages of Vietnam operating out of the Ubon Thailand area.

A lot of what he did was under the radar as he operated with the Christians In Action.

Funny story was when he retired form work, he went to the VA to get benefits relating to the medications he was taking, but when they plugged in his service number to get his DD-214, four different people came up with that number. He'd been "sheep dipped" so many times, his records were all screwed up.

He didn't talk at length about his combat experiences, but one of the few things he would talk about was that when he was in Thailand, he bought a spider monkey and a bear and kept them in his hooch. When the beer plane would come, the monkey would get a beer and hang out swinging, and Chief and the bear would wrestle to see who got the rest of the case. The bear was one of those ones that have a gold "V" on their chest and was declawed and his teeth were filed down.

Thanks for sharing! 3/5 was my main unit. Semper Fi to you and Chief.

Well, I got a virtual headslap from the old man. He wasn't with 3/5, he was with 3rd Pioneer Battalion. Don't know why I had 3/5 on the brain.

Indeed, he is a mountain of a man and went out with dignity. It gives me a lot of comfort to know that he led a very full life and died with no regrets and with no fuel left in his tank.

With much respect, here is to you Chief! You are a special breed of Devil Dog.
