    One Of My Father's Wishes

Some of you may know, but my father passed away unexpectedly this past Friday. One of the things that stuck in my head regarding his wishes after his death was that he wanted me to break his Marine Corps officer's sword and place it on his casket before he is buried. Since there is no protocol or "official" way of doing this, last night I assembled my brother-in-law, two cousins and three close friends whom my father was always close to and had an impromptu memorial for Chief. There were a few tears, lots of laughter and a few bottles of single malt Macallan, bourbon and tequila consumed.

Chief got the last laugh though, I found out that one cannot break a Mameluke sword by standing on it. We broke out the Dremel to do the final cut.

To 308Dave and the rest of the boys, thank you gentlemen for a fitting tribute to a giant of a man....

He had always told me he wanted the sword broken. Don't know why, that's just what he wanted.

We will be placing a Lone Star beer in the casket for his journey though.

Sorry to hear about your Dad.

Do you think he made that one up about the sword? If so, I will bet he laughed inside when he made the request and is still laughing. Remembering the good times will get you thru this. Sounds like someone I would have liked to have known. Again, my condolences to you and your family.

Sorry for your loss. When I was a kid I used to watch a show called Branded. They ripped off his stripes and broke his sword. I think he was getting kicked out.

                        Hate to hear it, hand.

Fulfilling his wish was very honorable of you.
