Hmmm, my homeowners insurance isn't 50% higher due to having a pool.

Mine either, I have USAA and talked to them prior to building the pool about fence requirements, etc. They said they had no requirement for a fence and the insurance would only go up to cover the increase in property that could be damaged in some event, although not sure what could damage a pool, tornado?

The only requirement for the fence was associated with either an HOA or City ordinance. I don't live in the city and our HOA has no such requirement.

I do have a friend that had their son fall in the pool and had drowned, the dad found him and through a miracle he was able to resuscitate him. They ended up with the net over the pool after that incident.

Having a fence around a pool is definitely a good idea. We don't have a pool, but I know people around here get them not only for safety, but to keep deer out. Supposedly they can really tear up a liner if they manage to get in your pool.

We built approx 350' of 60" Black Chain Link fence around our pool, pool & A/C equipment, & outdoor kitchen area a couple of months ago. (5) 4' gates & (1) 10' double gate. It ran right @ $10/lft.

Some municipalities have specific requirements. Like latches have to be self-closing and above a certain height, gates have to be spring-loaded to shut, exterior doors going into the pool area have to be spring-loaded, etc. I guess it's part of the building code, not sure. Just things I remember from building our pool at my prior house.

Good to know. That sounds pretty easy

Pool Guard has done a dozen or more pool fences for me in Houston area.

We had to do this for ALL gates leading to the pool area to satisfy our adoption certification criteria. My wife decided this would be her project and she spent a ton of money trying different things, none of which worked consistently. Finally I used a combination of (2) trampoline springs and a heavy-duty privacy fence gate latch to make it work. I also had to mount surface bolts on all exterior doors so children couldn't just turn the deadbolt & knob to gain outside access.

USAA didn't even care I had a pool, unless it was over six feet deep. Mine is five and a half feet, so insurance didn't even go up at all. The city of Houston did inspect the gates to make sure they were self latching on our fence. The guy also advised us to put up a no diving sign and a sign advising people to watch their kids. As far as safety goes, I would go with something temporary around the pool. Unless you find some fence that goes well with your decor. Kids figure out how to work gates pretty fast.

Just ordered 8 sections of this from Amazon + 1 self-closing gate for my pool.

Yard already has a privacy fence to keep the neighborhood kids out. Backdoor we are installing an auto closing hinge so when the 7 or 12 yr old go out back it will shut quickly behind them and not leave it open for the 3 yr old. We also have an alarm with the chirp turned on so anytime that door is open we will get alerted. I may also install a lock higher up on the door so he can't reach the lock easily. I figure my best bet is to stop him from going out the door as a 1st level of safety. After that the pool fence will provide enough resistance that we can get outside before he gets in the water.

I am still considering the net, especially one with a leaf guard. Safety and lower maintenance would be a great combination!

Fence around yard with a self closing gate and a rail/banister with a latching gate around pool deck.

Along with a fence, have alarms on the gates. I wish that I had done this before my 2 year old daughter Tristan got outside and drowned.

Do not think that you have it covered. There are too many stories of kids defeating latched/locked gates and drowning.

Multiple layers of protection and hyper awareness.
