I don't anticipate to run it much either. It's primarily for the hot tub.

        Then that is plenty good.

Think I'm leaning toward the Hayward H400FDN like Sparkles has. I like the Cupro nickel heat exchanger and this heater has good/decent on-line reviews.

I'm really looking for folks to say that they've had *** so many years and no issues... or had *** and nothing but trouble.

The Pentair MasterTemp 400k is all I've ever used. I got 12 years out of the last one and it was used all the time. No less than 3x/week all year, every year.

I recommend buying extra Jandy valves and designing your plumbing so that every gallon of water is not pumped unnecessarily through the heater while it's not in use. Bypass the heater during normal pool motor filtering functions. I attribute this to why my heaters last as long as they do. Our automated Jandy valves are controlled by an Aqualink System. Valves and the Aqualink cost much less than a new heater.

We have this exact set-up. The first Pentair lasted for twelve years with heavy usage, it was replaced with a new 400 last year. We've been very pleased with Pentair.

The idea of a bypass seems really good. Do you cut it off completely or leave a little running thru to keep from stagnation?

Also the hayward says they have a patented header bypass design. Anyone know if that is doing the same thing? From the pics it seems it might be.

Yes. When the Jandy valves are closed during normal pump operation, they are completely closed. With the Aqualink control, I have it programmed to open the valve several min/week. Either way, ours won't get stagnant water because of how much we use our heater (3x/week every week of the year).
