    Need Help !! Fleas!

I had some stray dogs come hang out at the house. They are gone now but my yard is full of fleas. And some have gotten on us and into the house. What can I use to kill the ones in the yard and is there anything to use in the house. Or should I just call a pest guy.

Do you have pets? If not, either way will work. If want to DIY, Complete insect control made by Bayer will work in yard (granules) Knockout spray from a vet works well in the house. Will need to repeat in two weeks.

If you have pets, must treat all of them. Multiple products available. Most of the OTC products are not nearly as effective as those you get from the vet.

I did a short stint in pest control once. Some guys here may know more but I think its pretty universal that you will need to spray your yard and have the house treated.

At the same time, treat your pets with some fairly high-end treatments, that will last at least a month. If you can quarantine them for a day or two, that might help. A cheap flea collar from wal-mart does not count. Go to the vet and get a real treatment.

This last part is the hardest to get people to do, but it works/helps...vacuum the house. A lot....I mean A LOT, A LOT. As in, do it several times. Crack open a beer, put in the head phones and vacuum the house, slowly. Over and over. Empty the bag into a separate trash bag from your household trash. You are going for the eggs here, not the adults.

Wash all relevant laundry but dry it with very high heat, comforters, pillows etc.

Do not wait, the problem will not go away on its own.

I'll have to look at the container when I get home to see what it was that we used in the house when we found a flea on one of our pets. For the yard though we use Demon and spray from the perimeter of the house out to about 40'. It drives everything away from the house.

On top of what the folks above me said, if you have neighbors close by, treat their yards as well. If you don't the fleas will come back.

If you don't have pets, I would use permethrin in the house. If you do have pets, remove them for a day or two to allow the permethrin to dry completely. I would treat all hard surfaces, carpet, bed frames etc... permethrin is one of the active ingredients in lice shampoos. Should be able to find it at tractor supply in concentrate form.
Mix the 10% concentrate 1.5 cups to a gallon sprayer.

You could also look for something specifically marketed to fleas to be on the safe side if you aren't comfortable with mixing your own stuff. I mix it up for my hunting cloths to keep chiggers and ticks off.

Vacuum, then vacuum, then next chance you get...vacuum. You'll get them bastages and their eggs. You can put borax down before you vacuum but the main thing here is definitely...wait for it... the vacuum.

you can buy carpet stuff and bombs for the house, its a battle, I had to do this when my wife took our dog to the dog park while I was out of town. took a little over a week to really get them down. There is tons of yard treatment stuff. I use to use the granules then a few days later use a spray. Good luck!

Get Wisdom TC flowable at Tractor Supply and mix and spray your yard. Kills everything even mosquitoes. Contains Bifenthrin.

                      Good luck

Next door neighbor doesn't mow his back yard (or really his front for that matter) and the crazy old lady across the street feeds stray cats. We've been fighting flees for the better part of two years. It's not fun. We do pretty much all of the above mentioned items and they still come back periodically.

Treat the yard with any hose-end insecticide (Ortho, Bayer, Spectracide). You will need to treat again in about two weeks after eggs hatch.

Vacuum the house and take the bag out, tape it up and throw it away. You're trying to reduce overall numbers of fleas and remove them -- not "re-accommodate" them into the vacuum cleaner closet.

Spray the inside of the house with an insecticide that is specific to fleas and that has a growth regulator-- such as Nylar. This is key because the growth regulator is what kills eggs.

Finally, if you have dogs, treat them with a vet-prescribed product such as Comfortis, which kills fleas on the dog within 30 minutes as well as eggs, plus kills any new fleas that later get on the dog for a month at a time. For cats, Advantage works well.

I'll add to what others have said, and that is to treat not only the pets, but any bedding or plush toys they have. I'd advise doing it weekly until you get things under control. Check the pets frequently for fleas, and if you find any, treat them aggressively. NOT for use on puppies or kittens, but applications of diatomaceous earth (food grade) to the pets and their bedding can be helpful. We had flea problems last year - the first in many, many years. It ain't fun or easy, but you can lick this problem.

                            Good luck,

                            Dave
