I just bought two new saws, I have a tree service as a side business. the research I did made me go Echo. Stihl finally changed there saw engines this year in order to become EPA compliant. they hand changed all the rest of there stuff already, ( trimmers, blowers etc.). the EPA makes these companies run off a points system that's like debits and credits. by changing all there other lines and keeping there saw engines the same they were able to balance out there points and not pay any EPA penalties. well last year was the end of the grace period. Echo made the change on there saw engines 6-8 years ago and have really perfected there design and engineering at this point, where Stihl is still working the bugs out of there design. they say the new Stihl design is hard to crank, and has some other "Quirks' about it. up until this year I would say Stihl has had a superior saw, but now Echo is ahead in the game I believe.
I have the 331 from Stihl and have been very pleased. Not the saw my 044 that was stolen was but will do more than I want. Easy start. Nothing but Stihl on our logging jobs.
If you are really looking for a high quality professional saw, you should also look at Dolmar. They make great machines. I have one of all three brands (Echo, Stihl and Dolmar), and wouldn't speak poorly about any of the three manufacturers. My favorite is actually the Dolmar.
Never owned a Stihl, but I bought an Echo CS 303T, Top Handle last year for clearing brush. It was the first "expensive" saw I ever bought. About $368. Man, I love it, especially the Top Handle. It's "right there" and RPMs are always super high. Just have to keep the air filter clean, or else it can slow down on you. I bought it from an Echo dealership in Kingsville.
I have went to echo myself.
I have a 590 and it is a dang good saw.
Same saw I have and I love it. Think I have had it for two years now and have done a ton of cutting with it...zero complaints. It even took a swim for a couple minutes before I could find it in the bottom of the creek. Fired it up 10 minutes later and it ran like a champ.
I have the 600P. it a great saw. FYI if your not going to be using it a bunch, I would go with the CS-590. it has the same 59.8 CC engine as the 600 and 620 saws. it just don't have the commercial hub, aluminum handle, and replaceable roller tip on the bar.
