Well, your criteria is half right on the new one.

I hate this test. Pointless. The emphasis put on this test freaks these kids out. I wish it would just be done away with.

They had some sample questions on the news this morning. My daughter is in the 7th grade and one of the sample questions they showed for 7th grade would've taken some cipherin' for me to figure out! Ridiculous!

I would like to tell the students taking the test today don't sweat it. It's a bull***** test and causes more stress and anxiety for the kids than benefit. My 10yr old was awake half the night because they have these kids so stressed out over these tests. Need education reform in the State of Texas.

Maybe it wasn't as easy as I had previously thought lol

My son just took the Benchmark test and blew it out of the water. Heck, he hardly spoke a word about it. That kid was a cool as an ice cube.

It all boils down to 3 things:

                1. Being prepared, meaning your child isn't cramming a week prior. STARS should be a walk in the park.

                2. Positive attitude when talking about it.

                3. Don't make a big deal out of it.

I didn't do either the TAAS or STAAR tests.
I did take the Iowa Basic Skills Test tho.
In Marine Corps Boot Camp I learned not all states had such a test.
I formed the opinion that more states should.
When it came time to cipher a lot of the boots needed help whilst I was doing it in my head...

Lots had issues using there, their and they're properly ;-)

My wife's a bus driver and does the mail at our local school.
She says this time of year the kids act out more on her route than most others. She attributes it to stress for the tests...

Problem is the schools are making a big deal out of it. In Burnet the have STARS Pep Rally and crap. They have a STARS countdown crap. By test day the kids are so freaked out they cant hardly function.

If you so some research into this standardized testing garbage you will see they have nothing to do with the welfare/education of our kids.

                      It's all about money.

Yup. The test is taught until it's done and then it's movie time for a month.

Our kid was absent during the test. It's not nearly as mandatory as they claim it to be

Let me share a little insight. You are correct in the statement "I opted my kid out". But the school did not opt your kid out. The school gets a failure for your kid not taking the test. When you are absent, you must be there for the retake. If you do not take it then the school must report it as did not take. You guessed it, that's a failure for the school. Take my school for instance, we got hammered on the tapr report for not enough students taking the TSI test. TTESS, the new evaluation system for teachers says that their students pass/fail ratings effect their evaluation and employment. SOOO when you thumb your nose at this test, you are cutting the throat of your schools. Schools get hit on PBMAS, TELPAS, OCR, over rep of SPED, over rep of Hispanic, too many low socio eco students, not enough students meeting level III passing, and the list goes on and on. We have been set up to fail. The powers that be have created a flawed system and now want that system to fail. They are offering vouchers as the answer to fix the problem. So let's send our students to a private school system that doesn't have to follow any rules after breaking a good public school system by putting in too many rules!!!!!!!!!!!! It makes NO sense to me.

Assuming you mean 504, I'm sorry that he struggles. Sounds like he falls in no mans land. If you qualify for SPED, the ard committee can except participation and allow him to graduate, granted they must graduate on a minimum plan and can no longer attend a 4 year university. I have a son in the same boat. Doesn't qualify for SPED and really struggles. It is a screwed up system to say the least.

Does SPED stand for Special Ed? And why cant a child attend a 4 yr university? Doesn't make sense.
