I am the principal of a junior high campus with 240 students. Small school, small district. Lots of positives. We have 4 math teachers. I have had to hire at least one new math teacher each of the past 7 years I have been here, and I have an opening right now, so this will be 8 years in a row. One year we went through 3 different teachers in the same class in less than a year. If they are good they end up leaving for more money. If they are not good they end up being asked to leave and we roll the dice again.

My 2nd grade sons math homework consisted of equations like 349-142.
The way he had to show work for it was absolutely insane and took 9 times as long for him to get the answer if he simply worked it like a normal person that didn't eat kelp as a primary diet would have performed it.

      Exactly my point.

I have 2 friends who work at NASA. When your son starts division PM me and I will send you their phone number. It took them awhile but they figured it out.

They chose not to do this and we backed them. They received zeros and we were ok with it. Summer time is not school time!
Completely Agree, Our family time is not theirs to steal from us.

Nope. Not on our campus or in our district. Texas is not a Common Core state, although some districts choose to follow it.

I have found this to be completely false.
              I have a 7th grader & 2 in 5th.

If the work is not done exactly they way it is taught it will be incorrect because it will be incorrect on the exams.

Again, that is a local choice by your district, or campus, or teacher. The STAAR test only grades the answer choices, and they are multiple choice. It doesn't take into account how one worked the problem.
The work needs to be done the way it was taught in order for the teacher to understand the mistakes and how to fix them. However, we do not teach math like in that video.

Oh my goodness....what if I thought 6 was made up of 2 + 4....then I tried to find a way to match up my 9 to a 10...I would be stuck and never figure the problem out because I am not comfortable memorizing addition of single digits ?

How about this....memorize addition facts 0-9 and the math of the world will be easy.

Wow. That's like going through Dallas to get from Houston to San Antonio. I guess if you aren't comfortable with driving I-10. Count on your fingers like the rest of us and get to 15

The reason I asked about math is because I know someone studying to be a teacher and she is being asked to learn to teach math in that manner. It makes no sense to me, I am concerned that is highly unnecessary and terribly confusing and I don't even have kids. I would be infuriated that basic education like math is being tinkered with if I had kids.

For 41yrs I have used everything from basic addition and subtraction all the way to Trig. I use math for a living and can't figure some of the 3rd grade stuff out. At least not the way they want it done.

Oh I hear you. The none sense that is being taught is nothing more than what we refer to as "kingdom building". You re-invent the wheel (unnecessarily) and sell it for big profits.
