I am the principal of a junior high campus with 240 students. Small school, small district. Lots of positives. We have 4 math teachers. I have had to hire at least one new math teacher each of the past 7 years I have been here, and I have an opening right now, so this will be 8 years in a row. One year we went through 3 different teachers in the same class in less than a year. If they are good they end up leaving for more money. If they are not good they end up being asked to leave and we roll the dice again.

My 2nd grade sons math homework consisted of equations like 349-142.
The way he had to show work for it was absolutely insane and took 9 times as long for him to get the answer if he simply worked it like a normal person that didn't eat kelp as a primary diet would have performed it.
Exactly my point.
I have 2 friends who work at NASA. When your son starts division PM me and I will send you their phone number. It took them awhile but they figured it out.

I have a 7th grader & 2 in 5th.
If the work is not done exactly they way it is taught it will be incorrect because it will be incorrect on the exams.

The work needs to be done the way it was taught in order for the teacher to understand the mistakes and how to fix them. However, we do not teach math like in that video.

The reason I asked about math is because I know someone studying to be a teacher and she is being asked to learn to teach math in that manner. It makes no sense to me, I am concerned that is highly unnecessary and terribly confusing and I don't even have kids. I would be infuriated that basic education like math is being tinkered with if I had kids.
