    Spring Break homework rant...

So, spring break was last week from Monday the 13th thru Friday the 17th. The kids got out of school a little early on Friday the 10th. Knothead (9th grade) goes to class on Monday after spring break and finds out there was homework assigned during spring break and due that day. (Everything they do these days is on computer which I still think is a crock but whatever...) The math teacher sent an email out on Sunday the 12th for homework. A two page worksheet and she required the students to research NCAA teams in the tournament and figure their win/loss ratios, etc AND to pick a bracket of their own.

Well, Monday night, the 20th (after spring break) we helped him with the worksheet and attempted to research and build a bracket. The tournament had already started so there was no way to build and register a bracket.

He did the worksheet, we checked it over and he turned it in on Tuesday.

Yup, he got a big fat ZERO! He received no credit for the worksheet because he didn't do the complete assignment. There were students that went to New York for a school trip during spring break and they also received a zero.

Someone help me wrap my brain around this?? A teacher expects a student to check their email during spring break? Can they set kids up for failure any worse? We haven't contacted the teacher or the school yet...

That's bull****. I would definitely complain to the administrator.

Homework over spring break is as lame as it gets.

My 3rd grade granddaughter has Spring Break homework too. I e-mailed her teacher and just flat out told her it was not going to get done.

I don't see how the teacher could justify that unless there is some kind of written policy that says they have to check their email, every day, regardless.

I'd start with the teacher, and I wouldn't quit going "up" the ladder until the zero is dropped.

If they gave a small written assignment it wouldn't be bad. An emailed assignment of that magnitude is a bit over the top.

Tell them you don't want your child to be involved with something that's related to gambling. It could lead to drinking and drugs. They wouldn't want that in their school.

Yep two of my kids had homework over spring break. It's called a break for a reason. Right now my daughters spend at least 4 hours doing homework per day. Straight A students, but they don't have much time for anything else.

                    Good one!

Sorry, did not know kids needed an email to go to school. They might as well just stay at home and skype into class. That's ridiculous.

Nope. Never did have my kids homework over spring break or summer vacation. Just like when I go on vacation, I don't take my work with me. These are called REST periods for a reason. I would take that zero to the principal and tell them to make sure it finds a way to disappear.

Nothing irritates me more than a teacher interfering with family time. Like homework for a 2nd grader.

That's how they do them now. My daughter has a little tablet/laptop assigned to her from the school and has to check emails for assignments which are often assigned during holidays. Universities have been that way for almost a decade now so as annoying as it is its probably a good thing to get them ready for the real world. I still don't agree though with expecting them to check emails on break or doing work on break. Its supposed to be a break.

Makes me glad I graduated highschool in 2007, if the assignment wasnt given in class, there was no assignment. But we definitely did get homework over spring break most of the time.

If it was not discussed in class and the assignment was emailed on the 12th I would complain. bring up discrimination. Poorer kids that don't have smart phones or access to internet all the time wouldn't even know that there was homework. I'm a teacher, not saying you are poor, but if you bring up discriminating against the poor and not making accommodations for those that don't have internet access at home, should get it dropped pretty soon.

Alexis is only in 3rd grade and has at the minimum of 2hrs a day. Usually more like 3hrs.

The week after Spring Break, the teacher posted her pics from 4 days in Cancun. I sent her an e-mail asking why she didn't stay home and do school work like the kids. She wasn't very happy with me, but I don't care.
