There is no way The Teacher could verify that all children have access to the internet .
This. All schools have this. As an educator, I get tired of parents whining and complaining their child failing or having bad grades and how come they weren't advised. All public and private schools give parents access to grades, assignments, or the teachers' conference periods. Unfortunately, the majority of parents are not involved.

As far as homework, I think it's a waste of time, but some teachers in tested subjects are ordered to give out homework during spring break by their deans.

The teacher should have been better prepared in her lesson plan and given the homework assignment in class on Friday before leaving for Spring Break.
But as most do they use email and text messages as CYA to be able to say, well I sent it to you.
The problem is you do not know if the message was received without confirmation. Why can't a teacher communicate in person with the whole class anymore? I would meet with the principle and get it fixed.

I remember having assignments over the break in college but they were large engineering projects and weren't due the 1st day back. NEVER had HW over any break in grade school. My 9th grader had HW over the break as well, but it was at least assigned in class and not a silly "NCAA bracket" assignment.
I would talk to the teacher first then take it up the chain if you don't get anywhere.

Ask for a meeting with the teacher and, depending on the size of the school, assistant principal or principal. Just like anything, follow the chain of command in dealing with it. Having homework while on spring break is bad enough but having it assigned after spring break has started is crossing the line. The acceptable thing to me is for the assignment to be counted as a bonus for kids who happened to complete it. That allows them to get credit and not punish the ones who actually took a spring break.

If the teacher didn't mention it before break, I could see docking points for not having it done, but not a zero. If the teacher did mention it, I'd say it's fair.

That being said, I'm really glad I'm not a teacher. Parents breathing down your neck all the time about their golden child and dealing with the entitled children would drive me up the wall.

Yeah, the parents catch the blame. I'm sorry, but when I get home after working all day, I don't want to have to deal with 3hrs of homework. This really gets me going when my granddaughter comes home and shows me the new dance they were taught instead of the teacher teaching.

                      Common Core and now!

Our district is so bad, they are offering tutoring for the parents so they can help with school work. In elementary!

Here is what I wrote to a teacher and principal about this. Feel free to use my words I changed a bit so the teachers name and my child's name is not posted here. I will write the same thing anytime they try this. I wanted the principal to know too !!

                            Ms. Za*****,

I am Dad of child ****, and I am contacting because of the amount of project work you have assigned just before spring break and the amount of time allowed for what I feel is a completely ridiculous amount of work for a single project for a single class that is due the day after spring break.

That is not acceptable. Our spring break is our family time and not your time upon which to steal away from us family time. She gives and we as parents give the school district everything they have during when school is in session. Thanksgiving, Christmas break, and Spring Break are not up for you or any ISD staff to take from us our family time. If it was up to me I would have refused to have her complete this work. She has been working late several nights in order to get them done. I did not expect her to work on anything over spring break.

Any one of you may call me if you wish to discuss further,

I agree that the teacher seems to be ill prepared and launching the email after the fact is really pretty chicken.

However, I respectfully disagree. My 8th grader is on his phone all the time anyway, how would he not see the email? If you guys were in a location with absolutely zero cell coverage then possibly he has an out. As an owner of a company, I do expect employees to monitor their emails and phone calls, if not to answer, at least forward so that they get handled. I would expect my child to do the same. My wife and I disagree on this and have had this same discussion. She often wants to side with my child and complain to the school about whatever issue arises. While we have to be our children's advocates, our children need to learn to handle their responsibilities. How many times did my parents get involved with my school to complain about assignments or load? ZERO! We must make our kids own their issues. My two cents..
