Thought of the "H" when I saw this

Most of the birdwatchers I have seen up there are older but maybe this is changing.

I didn't know 32% of young men identified as girls.

"And so, it’s official: bird-watching is the new must-have string to the millennial’s bow. Once regarded as the preserve of middle-aged men wearing complementary shades of olive and beige, a nationwide survey of Britain’s hobbies and interests has discovered that 32 per cent of men aged between 16 to 25 have been birding."

        Now this was funny...

"By means of example, in 2013 a group of twitchers made it all the way to the Isle of Harris in pursuit of a needle-tailed swift that had only previously been recorded eight times in Britain in 170 years. Sadly, soon after they arrived they watched it fly straight into a wind turbine."

While hunting hogs at the H this past weekend, I was amazed at all of the bird watchers and wildlife photographers out there. And they were out there at first light! You could see the disgust in their eyes when all of the hunters rolled by in full camo with shotguns, muzzleloaders, and bows.

I'm a bird watcher. Usually it's a flock of doves over a grain field, or ducks coming into a spread of decoys. Yup, love me some birdwatching.

Isn't duck hunting a form of bird watching?

They think it is their own private sanctuary.

I enjoy birding--and I'm in my 70s. Been at it since I was a young teen. Now, I don't go out on a trip solely to watch, but while I'm out and about I look for different species and keep a life list of species I've seen. ID on the little tweets is tough when they are in the treetops and won't stay still--

You would think they would shut down the bird watching for scheduled hunting events...

huh? Why would you not let people look at birds from the side of the road? They close the hunting areas to everyone but the hunters

They aren't allowed in the units that the hunts are going on, but they were allowed in part of Harris during the hunt. I think the general feel is when you are checking in and out at the visitor center where they are congregating they look down their nose. I haven't ever had a problem personally.

I could care less, I'm having more of a positive impact on the refuge than they are.

I'll be bird watching up there next month. I'm looking for longbeards and I'll have a shotgun.
