The more I stalk muleys, the more I have come to the conclusion that a broadside shot is probably not going to happen. After blowing my fair share of stalks I would like to know...... what shot are you guys taking? I know that the end goal is a quick and humane kill. In saying that, I have blown a lot of stalks while waiting for the perfect shot. Please share your experience. What are you doing?? What do I need to do different??

First ethical, lethal, kill shot that presents itself on a relaxed deer.
The further you can shoot accurately, the better your chances.
Prep for cross winds and uphill/downhill shots.

Here is a question. Let's see if I can lay this scenario out.....Let's say you have a muley bedded at the head of a draw that runs north and south. He is on the south end and facing to the east. You have a southwest wind. Which way do you approach?Last edited by hunter68; 03-07-2017, 04:20 PM.

First good shot your comfortable with. Had a friend shoot at a muley quartering away, took the shot from a hang on stand, as soon as He shot, deer looked back, hit right between the eyes. Haha, if he wouldn't have looked back he would still be alive.

Stalking these muley kicks my rear!! I do fairly well getting within bow range....it's the shot angles that throw me off more times than not. That and the eyes from unseen deer. My last deer I shot, I knew he hung out with 2 other bucks. I could not find them anywhere. You got it....after the shot, 2 other bucks blow out of there. One was right under me and I never knew it. I'm talking real close!!

What angles are you mostly having presented to you? Hard 1/4 away or what?

not having a broadside shot is part of the game that we don't always win. maybe consider it no different than the wind changed and he busted you before the shot was close enough. I have done a couple where I got lucky and got close (sometimes you got to just wait them out) and they just stood up. I don't want to make him get up to shoot him because it will most likely cause him to bust out. Be lucky and be patient. But I have found that those western mulies generally going to give you a longer shot than many of us are comfortable with. so practice for distance on this game.
