I retired at the end of August at 49 with 20 years as LEO, I got burned out working cases. I re-hired part time as a Marine Safety Enforcement Officer, (Lake Patrol). I now work 19 hours a week and love it. Nothing like being on the water every day.

This thread has gotten a little loose from what the OP asked, but I'll chime, I work for myself.. and honestly, I don't think I'll ever formally retire.. Now I may get lazy, and take longer sabbaticals, but I don't think I'll ever actually hang it up. But I'm kinda young, so who knows what will come along!

Took a retirement package as soon as I met the eligibility requirements with ConocoPhillips, which was 30 years of service + 50 years of age. Definitely didn't leave with a retirement income but enough to position myself where I don't have to report to a job at certain time and perform X task per day. I work part time, tinker ALot, do some odd jobs, spoil my grandkids, and generally try to avoid as many honey-do's as I can get by with. I tell this story from time to time, some people look at me with a horrified expression and gasp, you left a good job to live like this? Yes I did, I sleep good at night knowing that the corporate world is no longer sucking the life out of me everyday. It's all about what's important to you!

68 when laid-off at end of March, 16. Company outsourcing all engineering work to China and India. Nothing came up so when I turned 69 in August, 16 I decided to make it official and call it retired. Stay pretty busy when weather is decent and I can get outside but when rainy/nasty get cabin fever real quick. Guess now is a good time for a west Texas lease since I plenty of time to drive and spend time there.

After 44 years in construction I retired at 62 1/2 and wish I had done it sooner. Like some have said you have to get used to a fixed income but I have never been in danger of getting bored. I love building things with my hands so I have more things to do than I have time or money. That plus grandkids and I have had a busy 8 years.

I Retired at 52. I wasn't completely ready to go but the company that I worked for was beginning to make a lot of overtures and noise about workforce reductions. The company put some very lucrative retirement options on the table that may or may not have been available to me if I was one of the ones caught in the force reduction event. The last offer made was one that I couldn't turn down. I would have had to work another 6 years to accumulate the money they were offering for early retirement. I wasn't ready, I had a son that was a sophomore in college, a daughter still in high school and I was scared to death that we would all starve. My son graduated from college, went on to get his masters, daughter graduated high school and college. That was 15 years ago and I don't regret retiring one bit. I did work part time for a while and enjoyed it, but I just couldn't seem to adapt to the part time work mentality. So, now I fish when I want, I hunt when I want, and I play golf when I want. One of these days they will close the lid on one's proverbial box and nobody is going to even mention if you retired early or if you worked till you died. All they are going to say is "Didn't he look good". You will know when the time is right, but if you are waiting until you have enough money, I'm not sure that time will ever come. Enjoy the time that you have, whether you are working or playing
